- Somewhere in the second battle with Crona, Soul was unable to fully break Maka free from the black blood induced insanity that had a hold on her. Sure she was still MAKA to some extent but she wasn't all there.
- She started having violent moodswings, during which Soul would lock himself in his room to avoid either getting hurt or accidentally injuring her in her tantrums. He started hiding the sharp things from her, like the meat knives, before he bought blunter versions.
- Blair was given to Kid to take care of and they were taken off the active Meister/Weapon listing. They now mainly live with Shibusen's support while Professor Stein works to find a cure.
- Spirit blames Soul for everything, and despite his friend's protests, he blames himself for Maka's condition. If he could have pulled her back none of this would have happened.
- Soul developed a severe anxiety disorder due to constantly hiding from Maka. The medication Stein gave him only helps so much, and it evolved into a need to make everything aroud her safe when she has a bipolar episode. It's similar to Kid's OCD fits when he recognizes something isn't safe and near his Meister.
- Soul's taking care of Maka mostly out of the heavy guilt he feels, and mostly through knowing nobody else would be able to. He's the only one who can predict her moodswings, or knows when something displeases her. It's due to this that he's slowly barred their friends and her father from visiting, thinking that this will keep both them and her safe.
- At night, Soul has nightmares where the little ogre takes his shape in monochrome form and shows him a marionette doll version of Maka in her current state. In these dreams, the ogre torments him, casually using a falsetto voice saying he pretty much killed Maka and that it's all his fault, something Soul already tells himself constantly, but having to hear it in Wes's voice is even more disorienting. The ogre proceeds to use Maka like a doll until Soul wakes up screaming.
