If it's any consolation at all (and stereotypes rarely are), my second child went through this same thing. His idea of life is to sit on the couch watching TV as well. After a difficult time, he DID grow out of it. There's hope.

Hey, is that the Animal Crossing owl? I've played on gamecube, but not on DS because we only have one game cartridge and it belongs to Jack. It's a fun game, though. Sam should be getting a DS lite for his birthday. Jack will be so bummed.
Yes, it is Blathers from the Museum. And dare I admit we are now a family of four DS's (mine is the lite, and then each kids has silver, blue or red) and three Animal Crossing: Wild World cartridges? Just calling me excessive doesn't quite cover it. Ohmy--it is so fun, and so addictive. (It's the sole reason I have my own DS now.) You should try it!
