I dreaded that I would have to write about this, but I have no power over death. As of 2 am EST this morning, my country has been plunged into mourning as our Prime Minister, the Honourable David Thompson succumbed to illness which he has been fighting for the last few months, Pancreatic Cancer. We were hoping against hopes that it was possible ( Read more... )

Thanks. I was just sitting here reading a letter he sent out to his constituents in the parish of St. John 10 days ago and it made me cry. I added it to my post if you wanted to read it.

The thing that made me really emotional was the fact that I could tell that this was a personal letter he wrote himself while he was on his deathbed. As I read I can hear his voice and his always respectful tone. In a country where we have a parliament that can be rowdy and contentious I had never heard him raise his voice in anger.

Oh his girls are still so young!

They have a brilliant male role model though.

He was 48 years old. His eldest daughter is around 20 and at Uni in the UK. His youngest hasn't set the 11 plus yet. It is well known that he was a Father and Husband first and Prime Minister after. He ran a campaign based on building up the Youth and the family and it was under him that we started a campaign where all school children ride on the public buses for free to break down another barrier which hindered children getting to school.

It was something that was not unexpected, but we really had all thought he would have lasted for a bit longer.

I've been watching the tributes for him all day. I didn't realise that he had been elected to office at 25 years old taking the constituency of our first prime minister Errol Barrow (One of our National Heroes) when he died suddenly in office. I'm 2 years older than he was then.

Thanks. We are so tiny in comparison to everyone else that it seems like such a little thing. But we are a proud and successful little nation. it just feels so cruel to take him away after only 2 years as PM when he had been running for the spot for over 16 years and finally got in to bring about change and rebuild our national consciousness.
