At least redneck assholes still can't hunt mourning doves. How did that even make it on the ballot . . . ?
And I hate it when people bitch about affirmative action. First of all, as you said, people of different races, sexes and religious backgrounds still do not have equal access and opportunity to education, jobs, et cetera. The most irritating to me are the people who complain that the policy gives preferential treatment to minorities who are not as qualified as white males. This is categorically bullshit. If a white male applies to a college he wants to get into, there's a pretty damn good chance he will. Overprivileged fuckers.
And the whole idea is to provide a possibility for the eventual "leveling of the playing field" as i like to say. It gives a chance for a future America without racial and gender prejudice, and I don't know why people can't support that.
"We have to fight a war against radical Islam" Why does religion have to be so frickin' political? It's been that way since the Classical Era, and I fear the two will always be linked. Perhaps they are the same thing. It frustrates me that everything needs a label. Democrat, Repuplican, Christian, Muslim, Black, Native American... By enforcing these labels, we are not promoting equality or uniting this country, we are simply categorizing it.
Also, don't you think that radical muslims want to fight a war with us as well? Why does everything have to be about fighting and war? It's ridiculous.
About affirmative action: I agree 100%. It's about time for America to begin to diversify a bit more. I'm waiting for the day when white is no longer the significant majority, but one of the many ethnicities in this country that was founded on the principles of "all men are created equal". Let's give today's minorities a boost, eh?
heres my take on affirmative action: if you can clearly take one stance on the matter without debate then you are wrong.
i mean, a lot of people are disadvantaged, and a lot of these disparaties coincide with racial differences that were caused by several hundred years of discrimination. surely these people deserve that to be taken into account, so that they can have a fair chance of ending up on the positive end of the economic spectrum.
however, affirmative action is undoubtedly racism. less qualified people may possibly get jobs and go to colleges based on their skin color. not to mention all of the people of other ethnicities that are quite affluent and are part of the same culture as white suburban kids who have less of a chance, because they recieve preferential treatment.
so basically i think affirmative action should be replaced by programs that give aid and preference based on financial status rather than race, to alleviate the racist implications affirmative action prolongs.
I don't know if that would really address the problem. Certainly it's a possible solution. The thing is that people are supposed to be quite close for affirmative action to be called in. Like comparing students, a black person would have to be almost equal, if not equal, to a white student in order to recieve preference. This way, the disparity can be blamed on racial inequality, and it can be assumed that a minority could have achieved more if society had more racial and gender equality. That's the theory anyway, although I have heard that it isn't being run that way in some cases, and that blows.
