I feel like I haven't updated in a while, so here goes.
1) When I get through this I am writing a horror movie script about it. All the freakin roaches. Now that I stopped keeping food in the house they go for anything else - anything paper in my house doesn't stand a chance. I've had to start sealing papers I need to keep in plastic - wedding invitations, bills and bank statements, things like my birth certificate and soc. security card - so they don't get damaged with brown spots like anythign else. Comcast slipped a flier under my door some point yesterday evening and when I picked it up this morning there were a hundred or so tiny roaches underneath. Then there's my poor kitty's food, which is always teeming with bugs. I've tried a bunch of things, like giving her her wet food in the morning, but she does better on a mixed diet where she has dry food to nibble on during the day then a dinner of wet food. So my new solution is setting her bowl in a bowl of soapy water because according to an article I read soap is a natural pesticide. We'll see how that works. I'm even keeping my toilet paper and paper towels in sealed plastic bags as the roaches were beginning ot nest in them. WHAT A FREAKIN NIGHTMARE. It's almost like a cartoon at this point - when I eat at home, on the rare occaision, I can't set my dish down because within a minute there's a roach on my plate. Same with any drinks, if I have to move while drinking I have ot take it with me, otherwise a roach will beeline (er, roachline?) for the glass. Last night I had my first roach nightmare, I had a box filled with them and they were latched onto these huge roaches (the size of my sneakers). I kept spraying them and the last one was really big, and after I sprayed for a while the roaches fell off and i realized I'd been spraying Stella and she'd been covered in roaches.
2) And speaking of roaches and the misery that is my building... I got chased out of the building by some Latino guy on Sunday, while going out to meet Jaz. The elevator was stuck on the 5th floor so two guys and a chick were coming out of the stairwell. Guy #1 came out, saw me, said something in spanish to me, then whistled down the stairwell to his friend. Realizing what was happening I bolted for the stairs (the realization that I was about to be ganged up upon and that the elevator was stuck hit at the same time), barely inching past Guy #2 who also had to throw his two cents - in Spanish - at me. But Guy #2 did not appreciate being ignored, so he began running down the stairs after me. Worse, they had spilled beer all over the stairwell so I couldn't hang onto the rail as I sprinted down the stairs and I was struggling to maintain my footing. I didn't look back but could hear him saying stuff to me (in Spanish). He followed me all the way out of the building where he was either stopped by or stopped to talk to an older Latino man (this dude is cool, he helps me carry stuff, we like him). I couldn't tell which... I was too busy locking myself in Meg and speeding off.
3)So needless to say the apartment search has been in full swing. Here are the winning options thus far:
-1 bedroom in Mt Pleasant (same 'hood I'm in now, but about 6-7 blocks NW of me in the heart of the residential section... meaning quieter, more small families and young professionals and fewer horny Latinos) It's the second floor of a row house and hte building is old, but the apartment has a lot of character. It's got a wood stove in the living room, a small deck off the kitchen (that you can access from the living room and kitchen) then a larger deck off the master bedroom. It's at the upper end of my rent scale, but it's cute and a one bedroom.
-Studio in Dupont, 16th street. Has a washer dryer! First floor, not preferred but it's also something in Dupont in my price range w/a washer dryer. Looking at it tomorrow.
-Studio in Thomas Circle. All utilities included, sounds spacious, close to downtown. Need to go view it.
-Studio in upper Georgetown/Glover Park. Not as keen on the location but the first month is only $750, and after that it's still in my price range.
Of course the studios are all going to have a ton of people interested. I tell ya, apartments are a competitive thing around here. I viewed one Saturday and there were at least a dozen other people there applying for it.
4) And on top of all this I'm fighting a nasty cold that had me laid up in bed most of the weekend - when I wasn't pounding the pavement looking at apartment or being chased by Latinos. So just when I need extra energy something comes along and saps it all.
5) I'm hanging out with tafkab (the artist formerly known as the boy) this evening. We'll see how that goes. I have to re-evaluate my desire to relocate because I'm not 100% sure my intentions are in the right place. I think I'm just trying to run away from the situation with tafkab which isn't going to solve anything. Oy.
So that's that in a nutshell. :p
