As the days turned to weeks and the first month passed by, Laura was entirely conscious of the weight slowly lifting from her.

When she had first settled on the surface, she had avoided crowded areas; embarrassed by the curious glances and outright gawking. She had never sought attention and now it came at the price of her failure.

When a day came that she no longer felt the attention, she thought perhaps the people had finally moved on with their lives. But then she realized it was her that had changed; letting go of her shame at having not protected her people.

She wasn’t the one at fault. They were. And now she reveled in their stares.

She had led her people. She had fought a good fight. And she knew the time would come when she would have to fight for them again and would never be able to say I told you so.

So she held her head high in the market and public washroom, on the bleachers of the pyramid court and the dance floor of Joe’s. She would enjoy this time of rest the people had given her rather than blame them for the damage she was sure they had done.
