Title: The Unity that Comes from Love
Author:
nvgvup
Rating:
PG
Pairing: Adama/Roslin
Word Count: 677
Author’s Note: Written for the adama_roslin Month of Love prompt: “Loyalty”. It’s short, but still my longest A/R ficlet to date!
Italic text all comes from The Ties That Bind episode. Ficlet title borrowed from battlestar wiki’s notes on the title of the episode which comes from a Protestant hymn, Blessed be the ties that bind.
Disclaimer: It all belongs to Ronald D. Moore. He’s a very lucky man.

“Frankly I’m surprised it took them this long to come after us about the Demetrius.”
Laura says from her stance behind her desk chair, hands clasped and thinning hair falling about her shoulders.

Bill fails to notice the defensive posture as he brushes a hand along his brow and gently cradles his glasses with his eyes to the ground.
“Any luck and it’ll blow over.”

“It’s not going to blow over,” Laura’s stare never leaves the Admiral’s erect form. “I’m going to be covering for you for a long time on this.”

The bite in her voice is finally enough to get Bill’s eyes.

“I wanted to give Kara a chance,” he responds to her hard glare. “I wanted to give myself a chance to believe in her.”

The sincerity in the Admiral’s voice is not lost on Laura but only serves to encourage the derision in her tone as she leans forward, eyes narrowed.

“Apparently,” she enunciates.

Laura’s eyes drive home her point as she takes her seat and turns to the files on her desk. The dismissal made clear.

After several minutes of maintaining the pretense of work, Laura closes the file she wasn’t reading and lays her glasses beside it.

“I wanted to give myself a chance to believe in her.”

The reason she was taking more and more heat from the Quorum and the press. Bill and his frakk’n loyalty.

Loyalty to his family. Loyalty to his job. Loyalty to the damned Colonies that no longer existed.

With a rough shake of her head, Laura picks up a file only to slam it back down.

Bill had never given himself a chance to believe in her when she sent Starbuck on a mission of faith. But now here she is helping him cover for his pseudo daughter in an act of faith that is beginning to far outstrip her own reserves on the matter.

Three weeks and Laura still has yet to reason herself into understanding Bill’s decision to give Kara Thrace the Demetrius.  Every time she tries, her mind is filled with a blurred vision of the barrel of a gun and Bill’s scathing words that she may not be the dying leader after all.

It doesn’t matter that that wasn’t exactly what he’d said. Laura heard the truth behind the words.

Bill Adama has never believed in the prophecies. Even after the Temple, and the nebula, and even seeing the frakk’n Tomb of Athena with his own eyes…Bill Adama was still an atheist at heart. Or so Laura had thought.

“I wanted to give myself a chance to believe in her.”

A snort escapes Laura’s lips as she pushes back from her desk, locking her arms and bracing her body in a stooped position over the gaping space.

An atheist was someone who refused to believe in the existence of gods. But Bill Adama still wants to believe. Not in the scrolls or Earth or the Pythian prophecy that had brought them this far.

What Bill Adama wants to believe in is people. His people. He is tired of losing faith in the people he loves.

“All that we are certain about is taken away from us.”

Laura closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, remembering the lines he had read to her in lifestation. Her body melts back into her chair as the frustration she had felt when she summarily dismissed Bill a few minutes prior begins to fade and be replaced by an intense wave of regret.

The Admiral has always been persistently loyal. Loyal to a wife that didn’t love him; To an Admiralty that wouldn’t acknowledge him; To a son who couldn’t accept him; And to a crew that didn’t really know how to understand him.

Yes, Bill Adama has always been loyal. But for once loyalty isn’t enough. Bill wants to believe.

He’d start with a daughter who may already be dead and a President who would be soon.

Laura is beginning to suspect Bill will need to believe for both of them before long.
