Summary: This is a little down the road in my Conversations universe. How do other people see Brucie and Clark?

The observer stepped off the garden path into a deepening shadow as two chattering people approached.

“What’s Brucie doing with a drab little dork like that, anyway?”

“Oh, I think it’s sweet. They really seem to be in love. And Clark Kent’s hardly little- he and Brucie are the same height. He’s just shy.”

“Brucie could do better. He’s no genius but he’s loaded and a total hunk. Why doesn’t he insist on Kent dressing better, at least? You can’t tell me he likes being with someone who looks so- geeky.”

“You might want to keep it down. The best way to get on Brucie’s shit-list is to trash-talk Clark around him or to hit on either of them.”

“Like he’d care. I’m sure he’s screwing around when Kent’s in Metropolis. I heard he slept with Bitsy Fairfax a couple weeks ago, and you know as well as I do that Oliver Queen was staying with him last month.”

“Yes, and she retracted her story when it came out that Brucie was in Texas that night and she was claiming he’d been with her in Gotham. Plus, Queen is married to Dinah Lance and she was there too. I don’t think they’re into threesomes. And consider this-- Bitsy’s not here tonight and I gather she’s been blacklisted from everybody’s guest list this year. He made it clear he wasn’t attending any event that she’d be at. The charities and social committees want to keep him happy and pissing off the Prince of Gotham for a known liar? Not going to happen. And did you see the reaction Paolo got when he hit on Brucie in front of Kent? Clark just looked embarrassed, but Brucie was about to deck him.”

“Well, Wayne must be cheating.”

“Why? Because Clark isn’t a male model? He’s actually a really cute geek. He’s a reporter, so he likes to blend into the background and let Brucie have the spotlight. Brucie likes being a public figure, Clark doesn’t. Personally, I was more surprised because Clark is so smart. Brucie’s not a moron but he’s not much of a deep thinker. However, they sure seem happy, so whatever it is, it works for them.”

“Kent must be into him for the money, then.”

“Doubt it. He hasn’t moved into Wayne Manor with Brucie, no bling, no fancy clothes. We’re a ways from Metropolis but he once mentioned the trip being pretty short so he either drives or takes the train. Brucie’s got the jet and you know how he drives.”

“I just don’t get what they see in each other. Kent is so painfully earnest and Brucie burned his house down in a drunken rage.”

“It must be love. Besides, have you actually seen them together? I mean, just look at them now.”

The view of Brucie and Clark standing with a group on the terrace was unimpeded. They were talking in an animated fashion, Clark gesturing enthusiastically. As the observer watched, Brucie put a hand on Clark’s arm and led him away from the group, deeper into the garden.

They stopped under an oak tree, its shadow playing over them. Clark seemed quieter, listening to Bruce and smiling. He did have a charming smile, the observer thought. Bruce stepped forward, sliding his arms around Clark. Clark returned the embrace, lightly kissing him on the nose. The embrace quickly turned passionate as Bruce pulled Clark closer, his hands slipping under Clark’s jacket and roaming over his back. Clark was hardly passive as he nipped at Bruce’s neck. Finally, the gasping pair broke apart, looking at each other. Bruce laughed then, not his usual society laugh but a real one, deep and rich. Clark was laughing as well, looking utterly carefree. The observer could hear only a few words, “-necking like teenagers-” “-damned boring party-” “-somewhere more comfortable?” “-my car does not count!-” as Bruce proceeded to tow a chuckling Clark out of the garden and presumably out of the party.

“See? They didn’t know we were here. I don’t think they’d have cared, except that Brucie seems to have lost his exhibitionist tendencies now that he’s in love. Too bad for us. They do make a sexy couple.”

“Whatever. It’s getting cold- let’s go in.” The two men strolled back towards the house.

Lex Luthor stepped out of the shadows, looking after them, his face unreadable.
