Question: What's to stop people from just printing free images from online and making the minis themselves, thereby not allowing yourself or Paizo to make money?
There are plenty of things available for free that are similar to ones that you have to pay for. Strangely, people continue to pay for the quality things.... :)
I would like to retract the third question mark from my first post. I'm not THAT curious.
I pay for quality, but there are people who don't care, and it's them I worry about. Even those ten people somewhere who are taking your images from, let's say, DA... well, those are ten people who aren't giving you money. I'd want to eliminate that variable entirely.
Eh, I don't post the actual sets I release for sale on Paizo. I do release preview images, and I suppose someone could go crazy and try to cut out a mini from those or the cover, but it's not sized properly, so I doubt it. Plus, they're only getting one for free.
So far, the first batch of sets has done amazingly good (my gnoll set is still at #6 on the best-seller list on Paizo.com), and the other sets are going slow but steady (and I'll be getting another mention on the Paizo mailing list).
Side note: the Paizo fans are pretty brand loyal and, at least as far as I've seen, there's been very little online piracy. All the packs also get a watermark, so whoever's leaking them (if they even are) has their name all over them.
So...this is what you do, huh? Cool. I should probably refrain from pointing out that I'm finding the goblins sort of precious. Especially the one with his mouth open in what I'm assuming is a battle cry of sorts. N'aww.
Yep, and next time you come by, I'll show you some of the finished product (they're all over the living room, so you probably noticed them). I actually planned on doing that Monday, but never got around to it. Sorry. :P
Yeah, the goblins were actually designed to be "cute but creepy". I'll show you the original art for them. Everyone wants a Pathfinder Goblin plushie (and if any of you Paizo folks are reading this, get to it!). I'll buy, like, a dozen of them when/if they ever come out. Maybe you can have one. :P
Well, I was a little...distracted, so I didn't notice much about your living room. But I would like to see them, yes. :)
Who wouldn't want a goblin plushie? Seriously, those things are adorable in the strangest way possible. This confounds me some, actually. They have ratlike little faces and long teeth and look like they wouldn't mind gnawing on my leg, but. In a moderately cute way.
Hee! I tend to tread carefully, since a few of my interests fall into a male-dominated realm. Actually, I chose my comic store based on the level of condescension that I received for simply being there and being female. The dude at Paperback Place didn't even attempt to steer me toward "girly" things, just recommended a few things I might be interested in based on what I was already buying. And he was right. Locke & Key is pretty sweet.
No prob, I'll give you the grand tour Friday evening. You'll get to see my cute 'lil goblins, and their paper cousin, the 6-inch tall, 3-D hand-made rune giant, and all the stuff in between, until you're tired of looking at them. :P
Alright. I'm passing out noogies to the Paizo folks until goblin plushies are a reality. You hear me, Sean? Wes? Erik? James? NOOGIES TO YOU UNTIL SNUGGLY GOBLINS THAR BE! Even non-gamer girls want a Paizo goblin to keep 'em safe from the Sandpoint Devil. This is a very viable product concept. Trust me. :D
All I know of local comic shops is Ben's favorite, Captain Comics, where I must resist the urge to mock everyone in the store as loudly as possible due to their physically palpable low self-esteem. It's a... bit of a problem. I do them all a favor by buying my semi-annual Transmetropolitan compilation graphic novels at the chain stores. Too bad they're too scared of me to thank me. :P
And I have never heard of Locke & Key, but I'd be willing to check it out.

And if it's good enough for Robert Evans, it's good enough for me. :P
