Summary: What would you do if you woke up in a different country, surrounded by unfamiliar people and given another identity?
“Hand it over or you’ll be dead,” a masked man points a gun at him, threatening to hand over the flash drive that he got his hands on minutes ago.
“Never in my life.”
“I guess I have no choice,” the man pulls the trigger, the target is able to see everything in slow motion. The bullet comes out of the barrel, travels in mid-air and punctures his body. Many shots follow after that which left him on the floor, bleeding and not letting go of the flash drive. He’s unarmed, weak, and dying and he looks around for his team.
Moments later, they burst in with a resounding bang as the team’s gunman shoots at the masked man rendering him dead before the rest of them hurry over to him to carry him out of the facility. The team takes him to the car and speeds off back to the headquarters.
“Shige, you weren’t even supposed to enter the facility. Why did you do that?” The mother of the group, Koyama fusses over Shige as he tries to apply pressure to his wounds. He’s crying, Shige notes.
“Y-you were a-all be-being shot down. I-I-I wanted to do so-somethi-thing for the te--” Then everything around him goes black.
--------------------------
He wakes up to loud arguing in an unfamiliar language. There are two strange, Korean men in his room is the first thing he noted. The next thing he noted is that he is in an unfamiliar place and the thing that made him scream is that he had no memories at all.
His scream seemed to have caught the attention of the two men and to his frustration, ten more men enters the room, all in different levels of alertness. One man who he assumes is their leader says something in Korean to the two who was initially in his room. Another one steps forward and looks at leader-san (as he nicknamed the leader-like person) and shakes his head. The one who stepped forward looks at him and opens his mouth his speak only to close it, then open it again.
“How are you?” The man, to his relief spoke in Japanese, a language he understands.
“What’s my name?” Is the first question that came from his mouth.
The people looks around, seemingly looking for answers. A tall and mature-looking man steps forward, pats him on the shoulder.
“From now on, you’ll be called Shin Min-jun, alright?”
“I’m not Korean. I’m Japanese.”
“We know that but we don’t know what to call you.” The man pauses. “Shin Min-jun, I’m Choi Siwon.”
“Nice to meet you.” Min-jun pauses and appears to be thinking. “How did I arrive here?”
No one answers and looking around, it seems like no one wanted to so he figures he’ll ask them some other day. Min-jun (it still feels weird to think of himself as Shin Min-jun when he doesn’t know a thing about Korea) stayed in the hospital for a few more days before he was taken to what appeared to be the 12 boys’ home. What was funny was that they blindfolded him on the way to the place and when they removed it, he was in what looked like a million-dollar facility.
Min-jun was given a grand tour by 12 excited young men and is soon settled into his own room, left to ponder on his past. He was staring at the ceiling when he hears a knock before he sees Kim Ryeowook enter his room with Kim Jong-woon in tow.
“We just wanted to see if you settled well. Did you?” A giddy Ryeowook asks him.
“I did. Thank you, Kim-ssi.” Min-jun bows slightly.
“We also came to give you this. It’s for you to write what you kind of remember in so you won’t forget anymore,” Jong-woon smiles at him as he hands him a notebook.
“Thank you. This means a lot to me. I promise to write everything here.”
They engage in more small talk as the night deepens and they only go back to their rooms when they hear the grandfather’s clock in the living room strike three.
-----------------------------
Min-jun tips the notebook in different directions as he repeatedly reads the entries he has written the past few weeks.
Spring represents our youth.
Summer represents our adulthood.
Autumn represents our golden years of life.
Winter represents our death.
It can mean anything and everything at the same time. He throws the notebook and pen to his desk before succumbing to darkness.
He was being chased by masked men, screaming at him to return something. He had something important to them. He touches his pocket and feels a small device, a flash drive. They continue to chase him until he runs into a room followed by the masked men.
“Give it back.” They start fighting as he refused to give it up. It lasts for minutes until only one is left, holding a gun.
“Hand it over or you’ll be dead,” a masked man points a gun at him, threatening to hand over the flash drive that he got his hands on minutes ago.
“Never in my life.”
“I guess I have no choice,” the man pulls the trigger numerous times and he drops to the floor.
He wakes up with sweat all over his body, breathing heavy and worried stares from all over the room. Min-jun looks around and sees his all his things scattered all over the floor.
Siwon approaches him. “We heard screaming and rushed here immediately. What happened?” He looks worried and concerned.
“I just had a bad dream,” Min-jun answers. The others look unconvinced but accept it anyway and go back to their respective rooms to sleep except for Jong-woon. He kind of looks more worried than others and Min-jun knows exactly what to do.
He gets up, walks to Jung-woon and captures the man’s lips into his. They share a leisurely kiss which lasted for a few minutes before Min-jun pulls away to drag the older man to his bed to sleep.
------------------------------
Exactly a year into living with the group, they start showing him more of the secret rooms in the place. They even let him know where they are exactly located, a few miles from the city centre, hidden in the forests. Jung-woon, his now-lover, sits him down in one of the secret rooms, the control room to tell him everything.
“We are secret agents, in simple terms. Our team is called Super Junior and it has been voted on that you will be initiated on the team. Are you okay with that?”
“I don’t even know what to do, how can you expect me to be a secret agent?”
Jung-woon points at the screen, flashing a window with codes that are very familiar to him. “Try hacking it. I’m the only hacker in the team so if you can do it, we’ll be together in this.”
Min-jun looks at the screen for a few moments before cracking his knuckles and typing away, making Jung-woon’s jaw drop at the speed his lover is typing at. A few minutes later, Min-jun sits back as he watches the screen go black then turn back on, now displaying the system.
He looks at his work in shock and awe and looks back at his lover.
“You’re a natural, love.” Min-jun sees love and pride in his lover’s eyes.
The rest of Super Junior enters the room with pride emanating from them.
“Welcome to the team,” Leeteuk tells him, a huge grin on his face. “You’re now a part of Super Junior.”
Suddenly, the room looked brighter than normal and in moments, it started to spin, a blur of colors invading Min-jun’s vision before
everything goes back to this familiar black.
He stands in front of a group of 4 people in a meeting room within the building. His respected senior, Sakurai Sho next to him.
He regains consciousness and sees that he’s back in his room, Jung-woon asleep next to him, worry evident in his creased forehead. Min-jun stands up and walks over to the table to write what he can remember from his dream in the notebook. After writing everything, he walks over to sit next to his lover. He reaches out to smooth the creases in Jung-woon’s forehead before brushing away the hair that’s covering his eyes.
“I can never sleep peacefully, right? I can only give you what I gathered this year, nothing more while you’re giving me everything there is to give. I’ll be nothing without you, Kim Jung-woon,” he whispers to the sleeping man in nihongo.
The creases on the sleeping man’s forehead evened out and a smile appears on his mouth. He turns over and mumbles “Min-jun” in his sleep, making said man grin cheesily while bending to kiss his beloved. Min-jun spends the rest of the night watching Jung-woon sleep.
-------------------------------
The whole house shook awake as Leeteuk shouts for them to gather at the secret base underground. So from their respective rooms, they all make their way down the hidden holes to the underground base. They see their leader pacing in front of the monitors. When they were all gathered, he stops pacing.
“We received summons from the main base. They’ve given us an assignment which will be held in Japan,” he looks pointedly at Min-jun.
“It’s to bring down an agency just like ours. SM wants Johnny’s down. Fast.”
“Johnny’s.” Min-jun silently mutters, somehow shaking his brain for something.
“Ryeowook, Sungmin, Siwon, you’re all going undercover as office boys. Siwon will be the new security guard, Ryeowook and Sungmin will be janitors.” A few snickers are heard from the team, Leeteuk merely shoots them a glare before continuing. “The surveillance team will be Shindong, Kang-in, Kibum, Kyuhyun, and Donghae. Hacking will be Jung-woon and Min-jun. Sniper team will be composed of Eunhyuk and Heechul while I supervise everything.” He looks around his team. “This is going to be a very dangerous mission. We can either come out of this dead, incomplete, or successful.” Everyone visibly shivers at their leader’s statement.
They plan more the next few days. On the day before leaving for Japan, Min-jun wakes up in a cold sweat with everything in his dream engraved in his memories. He reaches out for his notebook to write everything down before going back to sleep, getting ready for what’s ahead.
-----------------------------
They arrive in Japan on the dead of winter. Min-jun shivers as he remembers an entry in his notebook from about a year ago.
Winter represents our death.
They rent an apartment a good distance from the company. They also set up vans where the surveillance and hacking teams will reside in. Siwon, Ryeowook, and Sungmin immediately get to work in order to obtain information. After a few weeks of idly observing the company, they all gather again in the apartment.
“The security isn’t that good. I asked the security guard about it and he said that the company lost its genius hacker almost a year ago and wasn’t able to replicate nor open the system he created. This guy must be good since activity kind of froze when he went missing. Rumor has it that he was kidnapped from the hospital. That’s as far as I gathered,” Siwon tells the group.
Suddenly Min-jun speak up. “Kato Shigeaki, that hacker who was kidnapped in the hospital is named Kato Shigeaki. Tell me, I’m part of Super Junior now, right?” Everyone nods, confusion evident in their eyes. “How did I end up in Korea?”
The members look at Jung-woon (or Yesung) as if he has the answer. Jung-woon sighs and looks at Min-jun in the eyes.
“We found you half-dead near our home. We immediately brought you to the hospital for treatment. You didn’t have anything with you. It was Spring a year ago when we found you. You woke up April but you didn’t have any memories. That’s why Ryeowook and Heechul was arguing in your room back then. They were fighting over whether you will be taken in by our group or not. Leeteuk decided that we will and here you are. Any more questions, Min-jun?”
“No more questions. But I do have information,” Min-jun answers him.
He brings out a large piece of paper that looks like a blueprint. “Here is the floor plan of Johnny’s Agency. The top floors are occupied by Johnny Kitagawa and some of the most senior of the agents. Some of them include Kondo Masahiko, Higashiyama Noriyuki, Nishikiori Kazukiyo, and Uekusa Katsuhide. They’re basically the ones commanding everyone as Johnny is growing weak.” He looks around to see awe in everyone’s faces. “The first fifteen floors are occupied by what they call the Johnny’s Juniors, basically trainees. 16th floor houses Hey!Say!JUMP, a bunch of kids. 17th floor has KAT-TUN, they’re quite rowdy so watch out. The 18th floor contains Kanjani8, they’re all Kansai so they’re not in the company most of the time. The 19th floor has…NEWS, Kato Shigeaki’s former group. Starting from the 20th floor are what they call senpais. The 20th floor has Tackey & Tsubasa, a duo. The 21st floor houses Arashi, they’re quite a formidable enemy. The 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th has Kinki Kids, V6, TOKIO, and SMAP respectively. The building has 26 floors in all.”
Everyone looks on in awe as Min-jun rolls the papers and hands them to their leader with a nod. Leeteuk nods as he takes the papers before breaking the silence.
“Alright, because of Min-jun’s help, we’ll be moving out tomorrow. Undercover, stay on your toes. Snipers, position yourselves in the building next to it. Surveillance, the vans will be able to move in as near as possible since there is a public parking lot next to the building. Hacking, you get to be in the van closest to the building. Get some rest tonight, tomorrow’s going to be a tough day.”
---------------------------
At noon the next day, Super Junior finds themselves in place as they get ready to infiltrate the building. They were able to hack into the company’s security cameras as the surveillance team set up and monitor the normal activity in the building.
“Siwon, go to the door on your right. That’s the company’s control room,” Shindong says into the microphone.
“But it’s rarely used. They can’t figure out the system, remember?”
“Don’t worry about it, Siwon. I’ll handle it. just open it,” Min-jun tells the man.
Siwon enters the room with quiet steps. “How will you be able to figure it out, Min-jun. No one has been able to figure it out yet, remember?”
“Stop it, you two,” Jung-woon then looks at his lover. “Min-jun, what’s going on? How are you going to do this?”
“Easy, I’m Kato Shigeaki.” He then grins at Jung-woon.
“WHAT?!?!” They hear the others scream or scream quietly into the earpiece.
“We need to talk after this,” Min-jun hears their leader tell him.
Siwon enters the room, boots up the computer. They wait for something to appear on the screen and when the window that is asking for a password appear, Siwon signals Min-jun to give instruction.
“Enter katoshigeaki in small letters, no space into the username. For the password, ‘NEWS’, all caps.” Siwon enters the code and the screen goes black and then displays complex codes.
“Shit,” they hear Min-jun swear. “Siwon, get me at the back entrance. I’m going in.”
Siwon rushes to the back entrance where Min-jun is waiting and brings him to the control room.
The group watches and listens as the newest member enter codes into the computer until the building loses power, control rooms are shut down, and for all of the building’s entrances to close down.
Ryeowook and Sungmin burst into the room to see what was happening. They toss Min-jun a gun before going off again. Not moments later, five people enter the room, surprise in their eyes.
“Shige,” Koyama says, surprise and longing in his voice.
“It’s been a long time, Koyama.”
“Shige, what did you do?” His former leader, Yamashita Tomohisa asks.
“Wanna watch, Yamashita-kun?”
“Min-jun, what are you planning?” Siwon asks him in Korean.
“Shige, who is he?” Ryo asks him.
“He’s part of my new team.”
They hear more doors close down and more screams as Min-jun types more codes.
“Shige! Tell me what you’re doing! I’m your boyfriend, we tell each other everything,” Koyama begs him.
“Boyfriend?” Siwon asks him.
“Boyfriend?” He hears Jung-woon’s voice falter over the earpiece and something in Min-jun snaps.
“I’m going to shut down Johnny’s.” Min-jun whispers quietly. “Siwon, Ryeowook, Sungmin, leave.”
“But--- I won’t leave you alone.” Siwon protests but was cut short by Min-jun’s menacing glare.
Siwon nods before leaving the room, Min-jun punches a few buttons to open a secret door where his three teammates are to pass through.
“Shutting the agency down means killing all of us,” Ryo states plainly. “Cut this crap, Shige!”
“Spring represents our youth. Summer represents our adulthood. Autumn represents out golden years, and winter represents our death,” Min-jun says into the company’s sound system.
“I’m not Shige, not anymore. I’m Shin Min-jun,” he tells everyone before pressing the button which released a gas through the whole building, rendering everyone unconscious, slowly killing them.
---------------------
In the van outside the building, sobbing is Jung-woon, holding the notebook Min-jun used to write all his memories in. It’s open in the last entry.
He stands in front of a group of 4 people in a meeting room within the building. His respected senior, Sakurai Sho next to him. His senpai nudges him before introducing him to his new team.
“This is Kato Shigeaki, your team’s new hacker. He’s the best in the company right now.”
***
He’s been placed in a room in the company. No security other than the one outside the room who only sleeps. No one even notices him awake. He’s been kept from his team. Kato Shigeaki clenches his fists as he vows the agency’s destruction within his hands.
***
Jung-woon,
I’m Kato Shigeaki. I vowed destruction of the company. I want all of them dead. The only way to do that is to die with them. I’m sorry that I have to leave you. I know that when I’m gone, you’ll wallow. Move on, I’m only a piece of your life. I managed to forget them for a year and that was the happiest I have been in a while. Thank you for everything. Promise me you’ll take care of yourself. I’m sorry for giving you a lonely Christmas. Taped at the back cover is my gift to you.
Min-jun
