Notes: Kim Kibum is a surgeon that lost the will to live. Cho Kyuhyun is the new intern assigned to him. It's only with some help from the past that maybe Kibum can survive the future. Written while depressed and watching a Walk to Remember. I know nothing of the medical field except what I learn from House, so if I'm wrong, consider it...wrong.

Kim Kibum was known through the facility and most of the country as the emotionless head of surgery at St. James Hospital. Despite his lack of personality, he was also known as the best doctor in the better part of the continent.

Cho Kyuhyun knew all of this and more as he walked through the glass doors into his new boss' office, heart in his throat, suit pressed, tie straightened. Kibum had the power to make or break a career as fresh as Kyuhyun's with just one word and Kyuhyun had no intention of starting again from the beginning.

So of course his disappointment was almost tangible when he finally came face to face with the most renown name in medical history.

Scruffy was the first word that came to mind. Dark hair hanging unstyled over dark rimmed glasses and noticeable baggage clinging to tired eyes that barely looked up from reviewing medical charts as Kyuhyun made his presence known.

"May I help you?" the other questioned and Kyuhyun wanted to ask if maybe he could help the other because clearly there was something wrong with him being so famous if he looked absolutely disgusting.

"I'm the new intern from Loma Linda," Kyuhyun responded with instead, trying not to wince at the state of the other's clothing. Wrinkled, stained with coffee, looking like it hadn't been washed in ages. Surprisingly, however, the office itself was neat. Books were put away on shelves, papers stacked in neat piles and a lone picture standing tall in the middle of the desk, faced away so that Kyuhyun couldn't see who inhabited it.

"Ah."

"Should I...I don't know, go save lives?" Kyuhyun asked after too long of a silence, almost slapping himself for being so sarcastic to his boss of all people, despite the other being a disgusting old man who wore horrendously colored dress shirts and lint-ladened wool vests.

Kibum paused in his writing, the only action that Kyuhyun had gotten from the other since stepping into the room. "Yeah, that might be good." Kibum said after consideration, not bothering to look up at Kyuhyun as he continued on with his writing.

"Fine." Kyuhyun bowed and turned swiftly on his heels, exiting the room with a loud click.

Kibum sighed, dropping the pen as he lifted a hand to wipe away the sleep from his eyes.

"You shouldn't be so mean to your interns, you know." A voice whispered at his side, mocking him openly. Kibum waved a hand as to shoo it away. "That one was cute. Would have totally fallen head over heels if you had worn that suit I told you to wear this morning."

"Leave me alone."

"You're never alone." The voice laughed, floating around Kibum in leisure. "You disappointed him."

"I disappoint a lot of people."

"You never disappointed me." A pained look crossed over Kibum's face as he turned to acknowledge the ghostly manifestation behind him. "There you go. That wasn't hard, was it?"

"You're not real." Kibum told the whispery being now in front of him, eyes drooped in a sort of deep sadness. "Just a figment of my imagination."

"Imagination or not, I still own your ass."

"Whatever." There was a slight tug at Kibum's lips before fading into a frown. "Go away."

"Not this time." The smile was wide even as Kibum fought the urge to cry. "Oops. I said something wrong again, didn't I?"

"You never knew when to shut up. Not even when..." Kibum paused to swallow hard. "you were still here."

"You mean alive." Kibum choked. "Get over it, Kibum. It's been years."

"And only now you've come back to haunt me?" Kibum snorted. "I thought failure was a fact of the living."

"I do not fail!" The figure wavered in indignation. "I'm a good ghost. I've come back when you need me the most."

"'When I need you the most'?" Kibum repeated incredulously, eyes that had held back tears for the last week finally spilling. When the spirit of the one thing he'd wished he'd never lost came back to haunt him. "I needed you years ago!"

"No." The apparition shook his head, expression much more serious than any he wore when still alive. "You needed to let me go."

"I haven't." The words were small and Kibum curled into himself like he used to in his youth. Like he still did. "I can't. I won't."

"You will."

"Never."

"Kibum..." the voice sighed.

"You know me." Kibum refused to meet the unwavering gaze of something that could not, did not, exist. "I won't."

"And that's why I'm here. To make sure you do." The visage vanished in a show of smoke, smirk still visible even though Kibum didn't see it. His mind could. And so did the picture that captured it forever, sitting unobtrusively on his desk, making Kibum want to pick it up and throw it and not hug it to him like he was now, tears flowing painfully down his cheek.

This was supposed to be the prologue to a three parter I had planned, but I lost the muse so the idea probably won't mature beyond this point. If the thought re-occurs to me, I may finish it, but it probably won't so...*bows profusely*
