Macross Compendium - Ranka section Personality: Clumsy, cheerful, naive. That summarizes Ranka right down to her very core. Ranka's been raised in a very protective environment - which is understandable considering her amnesia and post-traumatic stress syndrome so of course her adoptive big bro Ozma would make sure she stays safe. But, at the same, due to this she's probably too naive for her own good. While she displays being cheerful and eager about things like going to the concert of her favorite idol or recovering from her tripping because of her naive nature, she's immature. Immature to the extent that she will be really stubborn and bratty about anything if she has her mind completely set on it. Even more so if you're treating her like a kid, seriously, not cool in Ranka's book. Bonus point is that she's really oblivious even to her own feelings at times. Seriously, it took the girl up till near the end of the series to realize she had feelings for the main character, Alto.
Heck, you could even call Ranka all talk and no show at the beginning of the series. Especially since she's always dreamed of being a singer but Ranka at first shows that she doesn't really have the courage to go through with it. But with the push of the boy she's crushing on and her idol, Ranka manages to gather the courage to make her debut. So, in a way, she's also hard working and once you've given her encouragement she'll definitely do her best in it and show it - even if she ends up tripping along the way.
Despite how her stubborn personality seems to show more of her faults than good sides, it's thanks to this stubborn side of her that Ranka is able to show how much she cares for her friends and that she's willing to do her best in what she does. If it's doing silly jobs to work her way up to being a top idol? She'll do all those silly jobs no matter how ridiculous they are. If it's traveling across the galaxy to help the boy she likes and her idol when they need it most? She'll travel across the universe to help them!
But, in the end, Ranka's just a clumsy girl who still has some growing up to do before she can really call herself "mature." Even if she doesn't exactly admit her immaturity to herself.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ She can sing! Her singing is motivated by her feelings for the guy she likes and thus she puts a lot of emotion into it.
+ She has a kind heart which is shown when she is willing to travel across the universe to help Alto and Sheryl (her idol). Plus when she takes in Ai-kun the tiny alien who could possibly be an illegal alien on the ship.
+ Does her best no matter how many times she fails. She can be really determined when she sets her mind to something. (Though, there's no denying that a lot of this is thanks to Alto supporting her.)
+ Believe it or not thanks to the Zentradi (a giant alien race in the Macross series) blood in her, Ranka is actually moderately physically strong. The girl likes climbing trees when she gets lost to find her way. So, despite her small stature, she isn't completely weak physically speaking.
- ... Clumsy. She trips on herself a lot.
- Immature. She likes to claim she's mature but she's really not. Examples being that she signs up for contests without informing her brother and she skips school just so that she can go talk to Alto.
- Slight inferiority complex. Even more so when it comes to her breast size since she's really flat.
- Selfish. This is later in the series before the canon point she's been chosen to be taken from but when she feels like the guy she likes has chosen another girl over her... Ranka suddenly finds herself unable to sing. It takes a slap from Sheryl to slap sense into her again.

First Person Sample: [The video starts and before you there shall be one young girl, who is fidgeting a bit before starting to speak.]
Um, yes! Hi! Hello? I did this right, I think... So everyone should be able to see this. Um, where do I start... I'm Ranka! I'm new around here and. . . Well, I don't really know where to begin... Actually, I think need help. Or not just think since I really have no idea what's going on and, and...
[She stops herself from saying anything more and takes a deep breathe before speaking again.]
So if I could ask some questions that would be really great. I promise I won't take too much of your time! Thank you very much- Wah! N-No, don't- Ah, careful! Kyaaaa-!!
[And down goes Ranka. That is to say she completely fell down and for a while there is silence... Before you see something pop its head into view.
Igglypuff.
What? She wanted to introduce herself too.]
Third Person Sample: Sure, the whole point of being here is to get Gym badges but that doesn't mean you'll be good at it. Ranka had trouble with training her Pokemon and it wasn't because her Pokemon was rebellious. She just had a lot of trouble forcing something so small (and cute too) to fight in battles. Taking Pop to the Pokemon Center isn't exactly one of her fondest memories.
That's why today she decided to take Pop out for a walk around. Eventually, they had come across an open bench and with that she picked up Pop and plopped down onto the seat while resting the cheerful Igglypuff on her lap.
"Waaah, somehow it feels like we've been doing nothing but training you these days, huh, Pop-chan?" She said to Pop who gave a cheerful "Iggly!" in response to her question. At times like this she felt like taking a nap to relax but sleeping out in public like this probably wouldn't be such a good idea...
"Hmm, hey, Pop-chan, you should take a nap if you're tired!" She was one second too late, though, as the tiny Pokemon let out a yawn and curled up inside her lap before nodding off into a doze. She giggled as she stared down at the tiny creature who she had slowly grown to become attached to. After a while she started humming quietly so as to give the Pokemon a small lullaby but eventually the humming turned into singing without her realizing.
"Aimo, aimo. Neder rushe..." As she sang she started think about home. This song that she always sang when she wanted to think or feel calm. It always made her think of home now that she was here. It was the last memory she could recall from her childhood but now it also served as a link to her home for her. As much as she enjoyed spending time with Pop and seeing things she hadn't seen before... She still missed her friends, family, and her home.
"I wonder how they're doing... Alto-kun and Onii-chan." She mumbled to herself quietly. Thinking about home still makes sad but at the same time remembering about them she would think about Alto and how he supported her with her dream. Even now she wanted to believe that he would support her here too.
"... Yeah, I'll keep doing my best!" And there was nothing that could stop her from doing so.
