Title: What I feel when I see you (but can't seem to say)
Rating: PG...13...? Suggestive.
Word Count: 850~
Summary: Written for the bonus challenge #6 at
summerpornathon. Arthur makes a mixtape (or, well, a CD) because other people say it so much better than he does. Songfic of sorts, I suppose, or a running commentary on the songs as they listen to them.
It took Lancelot asking if Merlin wanted to go out clubbing with him one night for Arthur to start panicking and trying to tell Merlin. Every time he tried though, Merlin would look on expectantly as he clammed up spectacularly. If there was a hopefully gleam in Merlin's eye, he must have imagined it between his stupid hand waves and his nine attempts to start a speech.
Finally, Arthur decided that he just needed to find the right words. "Arthur, I don't really listen to any of this music apart from Moulin Rouge and it's about a prostitute," Merlin said with amusement, scanning the writing scrawled around the CD, which only listed the artists. It would 'ruin the surprise', as Arthur had said.
With a slightly embarrassed shuffle, Arthur shrugged. "All of your music is about being depressed and break-ups and betrayal, which wasn't really the sort of theme I was going for." He swallowed, not sure whether he should stay for this part. "I should, er, go, and leave you to listen to it." He scrabbled for his bag and books, suddenly aware of how it was all spread out over his desk.
"Hey!" Merlin grabbed his wrist as he tried to leave. "No, you've got to listen to it through with me! Besides, you have a CD player in your car."

Britney Spears - You Drive Me CrazyYou drive me crazy
I just can't sleep
I'm so excited, I'm in too deep
Crazy, but it feels alright
Baby, thinking of you keeps me up all night
Tell me, you're so into me
That I'm the only one you will see
Tell me, I'm not in the blue
That I'm not wasting, my feelings on you.
They sat, parked outside Merlin's home, in Arthur's car. Arthur's hands twitched on the steering wheel, watching Merlin out of the corner of his eye. Merlin's lips twitched into a small smile. "So, you decided to start this whole thing off with Britney Spears?" Arthur could practically see Merlin trying to figure out which song it was. His eyes widened as they got past the intro, and Merlin suddenly, finally realised what the CD was for.
They sat in silence as the song blared. Arthur staring out the window determinedly and Merlin looking down at his jeans. Merlin licked his lips slowly, and Arthur nearly bolted out of the car. Eventually, Merlin said, barely audible over the song, "Yeah, but Britney Spears, Arthur?" And everything was all right.

Moulin Rouge - El Tango de RoxanneHis eyes upon your face,
His hand upon your hand,
His lips caress your skin,
It's more than I can stand
When Merlin looked meaningfully at Arthur, Arthur had enough grace to blush. "You're not allowed to get jealous when you hadn't even told me how you felt," Merlin pointed out. "Besides, I'm not a prostitute and I'm not wearing any red dresses for you. I hope that's clear." The size of his grin also showed how clear it was that Merlin was actually very touched and somewhat proud of Arthur's jealousy.
-
Taylor Swift - You Belong With MeIf you could see
That I'm the one
Who understands you
Been here all along
So why can't you
See you belong with me
You belong with me.
Merlin shook his head in amused disbelief. "This is exactly what I wanted to say to you! You went out with Sophia, and then Vivian, and, and... I thought you weren't interested at all." He reached out, taking Arthur's hand, which was trembling a bit. He knew exactly what Arthur's hand looked like, from hours of watching him, but he'd never held it, never curled his fingers around it. He liked it.

Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have To Say You Love MeYou don't have to say you love me,
Just be close at hand.
You don't have to stay forever,
I will understand.
Believe me, believe me.
"I never went anywhere though," Merlin protested faintly, very glad that the windows were closed so the entire street didn't have to listen to them listening to Dusty and wondering where exactly this song fit in.
Arthur grinned sheepishly, "It was more about just the chorus, but I thought that having four lines of a song probably wasn't going to cut it."
Merlin sighed. "Of course I love you, you idiot."
-
Erasure - AlwaysAlways, I wanna be with you
And make believe with you
And live in harmony, harmony oh love.
"That is the gayest, and yet most catchy song I have ever heard," Merlin stared at the CD player, mesmerised.
"I almost put 'Love Game' on there," Arthur said defensively, as if to draw the comparison as to how bad it could have been.
Merlin paused, running the song lyrics through his head. He didn't have to get very far into it before coughing incredulously. "You want to take a ride on my discostick?!"
