fic: Christmas Cards

Title: Christmas Cards
Rating: G
Summary: Ficlet wherein Merlin is an envelope. Yes, an envelope.
AN: IDEK. Blame wickednotevil and the letter rack I was sitting near when I wrote this.

Merlin was an envelope. He lay in the packet for days, vaguely able to hear people talking as they walked past his packet of envelopes in the post office. He supposed vaguely that if he so wished, he could probably stop being an envelope and be something else, but Arthur wasn't around and it was quite peaceful being an envelope really.

Being an envelope gave Merlin lots of time to think: what to say the next time he saw Arthur as a human, or what witty comebacks to make to Mordred, that little bastard, and such other things. He could have always communicated with the other envelopes, of course, but the one on top of him had been a gargoyle in a previous life and had forgotten how to make full sentences, and the one underneath him was still in mourning. For itself.

In fact, Merlin was so lost in thought these days that he barely noticed when someone bought his packet of envelopes and walked away with them. Merlin bumped along in the shopping bag, and then the car, and then settled himself into his new home in a drawer without much fuss at all.

It got a little breezy when the gargoyle-letter was picked off the top of him, but then Merlin decided that he was better off without the jumbled gargoyle-grunting in envelope language in his top flap. The day finally came when Merlin was to be used though - it was almost Christmas, and a great many of the packet were needed for Christmas cards, and it was then that Merlin felt it. That little hum, that little vibration that let him know: Arthur was here.

Whilst on the dining room table, Merlin checked to see if the human filling out Christmas cards was Arthur, but it definitely wasn't (female, for one thing, and that was just a disturbing thought). He wasn't too worried about it though - he was sure that he and Arthur would be reunited at the right time.

"Darling, Have the best of Christmases. Love you." Merlin heard the woman talk to herself as she signed the Christmas card, and thought how sweet it was of her. She picked him up and slipped the Christmas card inside him before tucking his flap in.

It all became so clear that Merlin could barely believe it. Arthur?!

The Christmas card hummed silently at him. Well, who else? Merry Christmas, Merlin.
