Powerful image but he slips from necrophobia into connection to nationalistic stereotyping. I think both work separately with the Firebird image but I am not sure that he has set the sheets to sail to both ports simultaneously. He could be using the Transam image to tie to Death/Grim Reaper notions. That would work but then he hits the weeds with the closing, unless he is making a reference to Iraq. Howsomeever, limited fogginess lends itself to allowing loose thinking readers to find their own meanings, even if they weren't intended by the writer. 'Course, I am full of Jolt [and other stuff] so I may be narrow in my thinking. Thanks for sharing.
