More Paris questions.

Does anybody know if Paris has a journey-planner type site like Travel for London, HopStop, or the NYC Subway maps sight? I'm having so much trouble figuring out how I can get to certain places. Is Paris walkable? I'd imagine it's less walkable that NY, but is it moreso than London? Anyone know anything about their version of the MetroCard or ( Read more... )

Paris is not that walk-able. I did a 4 hour walking tour of the city and barely did anything.

The subways is actually amazing.

The best map you can get will be at the train station when you get into the city. Every station (or airport) will have a travel info section and they'll give you an excellent map!

As for finding one online....I never bothered looking, sorry! But I'm sure one exists!

It is not particularly walkable if you want to travel between neighborhoods, and you should plan for longer subway travel times than you would in London or NY because the metro is more sprawling and less user-friendly (as in, there are a bazillion exits to some stops so you never really know where you're going to emerge). I agree that you should be able to pick up a good citymap there - if not where you are staying, from a metro station or some such. If you want to study one in advance, I would just go to a bookstore and look at the maps for sale and see what one strikes your fancy.

I think you can buy what is basically a weekly unlimited sort of deal (price dependent on what zones you want to travel to), that would require a passport photo. I don't know if you have to have one for Oyster card as well but it's like that.

What places are you having trouble navigating to? I found an interactive map and what seems to be a workable trip planner here.

As everyone has said, definitely not walkable and to be honest, the trains confused the shit out of us while there. Forget trying to ask someone who works in the station - they spoke so little english (or pretended not to) that we finally had to flag down some kid to get help. Once you figure out that there are two different types of trains and where you want to go your best bet is just to study a map in the metro. While we were there they were also having tons of station closures and whatnot... It was a mess... Anyway, I'm sorry not to be of much more use but our experience was miserable. Perhaps if we spoke more french it would help. Get the Eyewitness Top 10 book. It helped.
