This is my next project. My London classes end on May 5th, and I do not fly home from London until May 16th, giving me 10-ish days to make this trip. I know I said I wouldn't do Italy, but I'm only trying to do TWO cities in Italy here. Rome, Milan, Naples, etc will have to wait. Anyone been to Florence and/or Venice? I don't know how big the ( Read more... )

Ok when I was in Italy, I assumed that I would like Venice better, but Florence is WAYYYY more awesome. And prettier. And easier to get around. And there was so much to do they had to drag me away after 3 days screaming.

Venice was very nice but had a lot more tourists... and less to do. That wasn't being in a gondola which I can't lie was cool. I did see a lovely glass factory while I was there.

How long did you spend in each?

I LOVED Venice. It is touristy, but it's so different from anywhere else that it's still cool. I think we were there for 2 full days. We were able to see the Doge's palace & St. Mark's & take a gondola ride. We didn't make it to the glass factory that Lea mentioned though. (Lea, was that on Murano island?)

I wasn't as enamoured of Florence in general, but it obviously has so many famous works of art to see which makes it worthwhile. Pisa is also just a short train ride from Florence, so you could take a morning or afternoon & go see the Leaning Tower.

I loved Venice, and Florence. Both for very different reasons.

I spent about 2 days in Florence, and it was great. Lots to see. However, I spent about 5 days in Venice, and there is so much to see. If you like getting lost in a city and discovering random parts of their culture and history, then that is the place to do it... (and it is so easy to get lost there, which is fun). We did all the toursity shit, but also did a lot of walking around randomly, pigging out, taking great pictures, blah blah blah.

I want to go back to Florence, so I did love it, just didn't spend enough time in it.
i would suggest splitting it evenly. There is enough to do in both cities. You won't be bored. :)

AND I don't think flying from Venice, then from London won't be a big deal... like you said, you can sleep when you get back. :)

Enjoy.
