i hope they cannot see. i am the great destroyer

Was listening to the album for the fifth or sixth time so I thought I'd throw this up here. I know several of you are interested!

I talked to thelunartrinity about the album and I mentioned the idea of "accessibility." I mention it first because I find it kind of defines the album. I know there was a lot of disappointment surrounding With Teeth and its more upbeat nature - the tracks were widely accessible, and got a lot of play on the radio as a result. At the time when I first mentioned it, I felt the album, except for Survivalism, was on the inaccessible side with the dark semi-angst driven moodiness I remember from NIN back when Closer was new. Not exactly but it doesn't detract from the greatness of the album. I seriously cannot find a song I dislike on the entire CD, which is VERY rare for me. So what do I mean now, after another run through of the album (Zero-Sum, the last track, JUST stopped)?

There is some accessibility, which isn't a bad thing, throughout the album, but, as you get deeper and deeper into the album, everything continues to get decidedly darker. It's why "In This Twilight" and "Zero-Sum" are a couple of favourites for me sitting at the very rear of the album. Also I love the wankery in track 13, The Great Destroyer. The shift in tone is really well done. So don't be alarmed if track 2 through 4 (The Beginning of The End, Survivalism, The Good Soldier) sound a bit on the light side - you get rewarded for your persistence because each track feels great to listen to. Persist is probably the wrong word because on each listen I seem to be carried through effortlessly from track to track. Slightly biased here. :)

Go. Pick up this great album. It is fantastic. Even if I left a track out, don't worry, I do honestly enjoy every track a LOT. Been a long time since dirty and gritty has sounded this good.
