This morning we started removing the plastic sheeting and palm leaves that made up the kitchen roof, ready to upgrade to corrugated tin. It was wet and dirty work, with all the collected water and muck falling from the plastic sheeting, as well as a fair few cockroaches and rats- not what you really want living over a kitchen… Then the afternoon ( Read more... ) -

Today, it was all hands on deck to clear the next section of mora-covered ground, ready for tree-planting while the ground was still wet. This was not my idea of fun today as my arms and shoulders were aching, but at least the large group meant our progress was rapidly visible; followed by another evening of whistle-playing and going to the bar. -

Today was the boat trip. We set off up around the coast of San Cristobal, seeing male frigatebirds with their throat pouches puffed out along the way, and the first stop was some shallow water where we could snorkel with sea lions! I hadn’t snorkelled before, but the diving instructor showed me what to do and lead me to the sea lions. Snorkelling ( Read more... ) -

On Saturday, I went into town to make some phone calls and buy some postcards and some new flip-flops, and book up for a boat trip for the next day. I also saw some marine iguanas sunbathing on the rocks: they were smaller than I was expecting (probably from reading more about the land iguanas), but quite sweet, and posed nicely looking out to see ( Read more... ) -

A few people left last night and this morning for tours and surf camps, so on today’s hike, to the waterfall on the reserve, there were only four of us. Well, it was called a hike, but over half the journey involved climbing over rocks, often on all fours- but definitely worth it, it was another world out there, with the boulders and lava flows ( Read more... ) -

We were really making progress with clearing the area of mora now: clearing the low-growing plants is far more laborious than hacking down the big stuff, but I got to chop down a couple of invasive saplings which was quite satisfying in between the ground-clearing. Enough progress that by the afternoon we could start digging holes ready to replant ( Read more... ) -

An early start this morning for breakfast duty in the kitchen. Carla asked her mother something, then took me off outside saying “Cahiero!” while making what looked like a scrubbing or grating signal: I assumed she was showing me what to do to get breakfast, so followed, only to realised she actually wanted me to get my diary for more drawing.
