Listened to Downward Spiral on my new Set-up

And I think that some tracks are pretty poorly mastered. Unless it's intentional, there are a number of moments where there is a great level of distortion in the upper register (to the point where it doesn't sound intentional). I'll have to check on a different pair of headphones on a lesser set-up to compare. It could be my source, as well ( Read more... )

Distortion is a huge part of Downward Spiral. Are you listening to the newly remastered edition or one you downloaded.

You also have to keep in mind that the man was on A LOT of cocaine when he made Downward Spiral as opposed to Year Zero when he sobered up.

You should give the Fragile a try next.

Yes but there is the first release then the one he remastered later. I was wondering if the remastered album would sound better because Trent put it in surround sound

It's probably the original version. While there was great stereo imaging on some tracks, I wouldn't necessarily call it surround. Then again, I'd have to see Beth's copy.

Plus, I doubt Trent himself mastered his own recordings. I'll have to research that, but the artist doesn't usually dictate that since recording companies want the recording to be LOUD LOUD LOUD for the consumer market (AKA, poor mastering where all volume levels are to the max).

Again, I could be wrong. And yes, you're right, he was on a lot of smack at that time.

No juice, no soul.

...I keed, I keed...
