There's a reason that a lot of my self-inserts when I was a tween/teen were girls disguised as boys. It's not that I wanted to be a boy, rather that I liked that tension that can come from negotiating a relationship where the equalities and inequalities fall in odd places. To me, having the male character know and aid in the masquerade really changed the dynamic -- instead of him protecting her/me physically, he trusted in her/me to take care of her/myself and instead helped protect the scheme.
Eh, hard to articulate but I can definitely feel the link between that and what attracts me to slash.
