Okay, I'm just going to put this out there and you can judge me as you will.

I think Van Gogh was a total hack.

I was just told (I had a Van Gogh lecture yesterday so he's on my mind) that he only painted during his lucid periods. He refused to create when he was hallucinating or ill.

Which had nothing to do with anything, but was merely trivia.

Aw, no.

I think Van Gogh was to "I'm making pretty colors!" the way a stoned rock guitarist is to "I'm making sounds, mom, look at me!" Sometimes it worked (as in Starry Night - an overdisplayed but still stunning piece of painting), and sometimes you get 40 pictures of the same fucking haystack.

I know you did not just dis Monet's grain stack series. Because I love them like....stuff I love.

Forgive the brain fart.
I kind of like the haystacks too.

Okay, you get crazy weird flowers in a vase that look like they are trying to kill you, but for some reason people seem to want to hang prints of them in their bathrooms?

Fuck if I know.

Speaking of bathrooms, I've put it off so long I almost want to paint it a different colour now. I'm still not really feeling the green.

Never cared for his stuff, myself, but I thought it was partly a matter of not getting him. I didn't like Hemingway, either, until I read more of him and had someone help me figure out the genius of him. But it hasn't happened yet with Van Gogh. Still don't get him.

I'm pretty sure I get him. I just think he died penniless having only sold one painting in his entire life for a reason.

Hack. An $82MM hack at this point, but there's no accounting for taste.

Now his brother! There's a good guy! I might have talked hubby into Theo for a boy's name, except we'd have to correct people all the time on pronounciation because I prefer the Dutch.

I agree with this, too. And you are correct, sonchild would have grown up twisted with having to rethink his name every day.

Not a fan of impressionism in general, and Van Gogh is...just OK.

I'm more of a "Truth" person that a "Beauty" person in both photography and paintings. I look at a painting to see how well it captures "true life", not for it's aesthetic qualities. Give me a great Jacques-Louis David portrait over any impressionist pretention any old day.

Jacques-Louis David. That was a painter.
