Writer's Block: On the menu

The weirdest thing(s) I ever ate were bear, venison, rabbit, and a variety of other wild game at a Latin class banquet held at a high school in a tiny Southern community.  The Latin teacher had taken advantage of the fact that many of her students and their families were hunters.  In addition, she had ordered large amounts of the seafood--shrimp, ( Read more... )

Man, that sounds so cool. I've been studying all things Roman for an original story I'm writing, and to be in on constructing and attending a feast like that would be total win. ^^

It was pretty neat. The Latin teacher was a former student of my husband's, and I'd had a class or two with her in the summers. She's an unconventional girl who isn't afraid to try really ambitious projects! The only problem I had with the whole thing was getting the grape juice stains out of my daughter's pink dress, but the memories were much more valuable than the clothing.--I had a Latin teacher who encouraged us students to read novels and stories about Rome and Roman times, and I'd love to read your story when you've finished it, or in a first draft!

"The only problem I had with the whole thing was getting the grape juice stains out of my daughter's pink dress..."

LOL, I can imagine! What a great idea, though. So many people are visual, and I'd think a reenactment like that would stick with students more than just about anything. Unconventional can be awesome.

Well...my story isn't strictly Roman. It's more of a Roman culture-based fantasy world (with Carolingian aspects). But I'm always honored to have people take a look! On a whim I actually wrote a WC AU loosely based in the same world, and have that posted, as well a few snippets of the actual story (a feast scene, actually), on my LJ.

But no pressure to read, by any means. It's all very, very (very) rough at this point. ;)

I'm eager to read these! I love science fiction. Science fiction with mud and pageantry is twice as nice! (But maybe you circumvented the mud?)

I've been assembling very cheap Amazon sf collections against the day of my oral surgery (next Friday, gulp)! I tried to think what would take my mind off pain and make time fly by, and science fiction stories won easily. I've been resolutely putting them aside for later. However, last night I caved and read most of a whole book. I was taken with Greg Eagan's "Yeyuka," written in 1997. Have you read it? I'm also fond of Nancy Kress's stuff and enjoy Gregory Benford and Michael Swanwick as well as most of the older writers. Awhile back I came across a first, an sf story I didn't understand. It shook me, I'm tellin' you. Then i realized that I might (maybe) understand it; it's just a lot more subtle than old-style sf (unless one considers Henry James a science fiction writer). :)

Many thanks! (Somehow I missed this comment, I'm so sorry!) I have upper chompers that have not yet been fitted to my mouth, so there is a good quarter-inch overlap on one side. I keep them secure with sticky-goo. Ooh. (The joys of senesence.) I'm sure I'll feel much better and be more eager to write when all this jazz is past.

I hope all is well with you, your sister, your family, and your pets! All is well here except for a terrible drought. I wasn't able to carry through with my WC bb plans because of three weeks' stay in the hospital during April that left me very weak. Maybe next year. My blood pressure is pretty well stabilized now and I am slowly getting most of my strength back, so things are looking up. All my best!
