Jim had had better days on the job. He still hadn't made up his mind if the fed life was the one for him, or if he was a con man through and through. He liked to keep people on their toes, to keep them guessing as to where his loyalty lie, and it was fun most of the time ( ... )

The evidence that he was looking for the box was well hidden, but she knew exactly what to look for. It frightened her a little to know that he was getting involved in something so dangerous, but it meant that there was hope. That sometime, far down the line, they might have another chance.

When the door opened she looked up, lips parting slightly because seeing him still affected her far more than it should. She managed a small, genuine smile. "I'm keeping up my side of the bargain, Jim, and from the looks of it so are you." She hovered near the table, not quite sure how to act around him now.

"I never go back on my word," Jim answered, shutting the door lightly behind him and locking it, as Scotty had gotten into the habit of barging in without knocking and while that was fine most of the time, he didn't want to risk it tonight. Scotty didn't know that they were talking, no one did. Jim couldn't take that risk.

"Pike let you in here?"

"I know," she replied, feeling another stab of guilt that she'd considered trying to hide from him again, even if it was for his own good.

"He did. I told him I was your friend, but I think he only believed me when I refused to give him my name." The less Pike or anyone else knew, the better.

She knew this meeting would be tense, but the more she looked at him, the more it seemed like something wasn't quite right. Something besides her presence. "Are you okay?"
