Outlander on STARZ (Scots and kilts!!)

Feb 21, 2014 19:00

STARZ is bringing Outlander to their network this summer. I read this series of books when they were first published, and again over the past twenty years. They are categorized as "historical romance fiction". Not my usual choice of reading material, but the first book really sucked me in and I have stayed with it. (The first time I read it was in ( Read more... )

Enjoyed the first one or two, then they lost the magic for me.

The first four books came out fairly quickly. Then began the gap years, which made it hard to stay interested. Lord John never really appealed to me. Other than his interest in Jamie of course!

I read the Outlander books years ago, and loved them! I think I got as far as their first year or two in America before having to wait for the next books/losing interest - The Fiery Cross, I think. Every now and then I think about re-reading them, and catching up, but I see she's still writing the series! I should try the Lord John books too... Mind you, part of the appeal was the Scottish history, which she seemed to leave behind after the first couple of books,so maybe I'd fall out of interest again...

I like the actors they've chosen for the series, looks-wise (and origin-wise) and I like the idea that Gabaldon didn't actually want them made into a series/film to be honest - so much can go wrong... But I shall cross my fingers (despite what Starz did to Torchwood)! Thanks for posting about this - I don't suppose I'll be able to see it for ages, but I'll keep half an ear out for it to be available over here...

I find myself re-reading the books about every three years or so. I am reading "Outlander" again now, though I pretty much know it by heart. It is true, once they crash land in America, she deviates to the US history timeline.

Gabaldon is really behind this project, supporting it 100%, it appears. She is making a cameo appearance in the first season, during the Oath-taking scene. The fan sites are overflowing with gushing and squee! I'm not that far gone, but I am looking forward to watching it.

You may be able to see it on the SoHo network, if you are still down under come August. Check your listings!

Actually I just got back to the UK, so I'll keep my eye out for it up here! Sounds good that Gabaldon's working with the project - that seemed to work pretty well for Harry Potter, anyway! *g*

Ah, I didn't know you were back! According to all news currently available, no release date is set for the UK as of now. SONY pictures is the distributor to foreign markets, so I guess it depends on if a network in the UK is willing to pay for it.

I read these years and years and years ago and have reread them several times over the years. I love the first three, (the first one is titled Crosstitch here, not Outlander) but I have to admit, once the American civil war entered it, I was hard pressed to keep my interest. I preferred the original Scottish part of her stories. I love Sam for Jamie, I think he suits red hair far more than his own natural dark. The actress playing Claire is more delicate looking than I imagined Claire but I think they will grow into their characters. I was really excited about the series, but sadly it's only going to be on Soho here, which is Foxtel and I don't have Foxtel. But the trailers look really good. I do think DG did extremely well, to get the dialect and landscape as good as she did, considering she'd never been to Scotland when she wrote the first one.

I also read these years ago, when they first came out. I have read them again at various times. I also lost interest around books 4 and 5. I think Sam will do well as Jamie, I am skeptical about Caitriona. From preliminary press, they seem to get along well. The first three seasons should be good, after that, who knows. I don't know if I will sign up for STARZ, I'm hoping to be able to watch it online.
