Steampunk

Can someone explain to me what this new Steampunk movement is all about? I remember hearing about it a few years ago back when it just started to gain traction, but when I went to Louisianime last weekend, there were SO MANY steampunk folks. And they looked awesome! And I'm thinking about maybe getting some steampunk gear to wear to Otakon this ( Read more... )

Not sure where it came from, but it's about 3 years old now and going strong. Everything from computers to R2D2 to jewelry and clothes - I've seen 'em all. I think basically you just make up what you want and go with it - I haven't heard about any set rules. I've seen a steampunk wedding - friend of mine officiated at one and he wore steampunk vestments with clock dials, springs, etc all over his stole - it was wonderful.

I'd say just have fun with it and see what more it's all about.

A steampunk wedding sounds AWESOME. I love when people do out of the norm things like that for their weddings.

I think the current upsurge of steampunk is in part due to Burton's movies (they do tend to have that aesthetic) as well as a rise of geek culture (a lot of prominent geeks like steam punk, like Felicia Day) and there are several popular games with steam punk elements, like BioShock and a few others.

Wow...that's a lot of pop culture for me to spout...I usually don't keep track of it.

Definitely a lot of pop culture for you to say at one time! lol But helpful because I've barely heard of some of what you listed. And I never really considered Burton's style to be steampunk so that's really interesting. I've always considered him to have his own style, but you're right, there is that Victorian feel to his movies, at least.

Seems most people are saying the same thing, though, it's basically a combination of a lot of stuff happening around the same time, giving rise to this. That's cool with me, too. Makes it easier to cosplay.

I heard about that exhibit. That's pretty damn cool, and definitely shows how huge it is. Going from mostly fanbased to being a museum exhibit.

It's a lovely blend of Victoriana and science and I think that's what makes it so attractive.
I totally agree with you. Victorian styles on their own are quite beautiful but steampunk makes it kind of dark and edgy with the tech added in. And thanks for your answer! That's really what I needed, kind of the different aspects of it that the fanbase likely got their imaginings from. Very helpful. :)
