If Tomorrow Never Comes
John laid awake in bed, propped up on one elbow as he gazed down at the person next to him. Even after months of living together, the image of Teyla sleeping peacefully beside him still took his breath away.
It was dark, but there was just enough moonlight slipping through the window to illuminate her features. A smile lit his face. She was so beautiful. He didn’t know what he’d done to deserve her, but he wasn’t about to question his luck.
John reached out with one hand, gently brushing the stray hairs away from her face. She sighed in her sleep and leaned into his touch. Unable to resist, he leaned over and placed a tender kiss just above her temple, barely brushing his lips against her soft skin.
He still couldn’t believe how much he loved her. He’d been in love with women in the past, but it had been nothing like this, never to the point where he cared so much that it hurt. Teyla meant the world to him, and he knew he would do anything he could just to put a smile on her face.
As he lay there, admiring the sleeping beauty at his side, a thought popped unbidden into his mind. If something were to happen to him, would Teyla ever doubt how he felt about her? Would she know how much he loved her?
He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but he knew there were no guarantees for that sort of thing given their line of work. What would happen if tomorrow never came? Would all the love he’d given her in the past be enough?
John wasn’t about to lie to himself, he wasn’t the kind of man who shared his emotions easily. He’d lost loved ones in his life who had never known how he truly felt about them. It was a regret he lived with every day.
Just thinking about the possibility of Teyla not knowing the true depth of his feelings sent a shiver down his spine. He didn’t want any regrets when it came to her. Silently he vowed to tell her each and every day how much she meant to him. She was the only woman for him, and he never wanted her to doubt that.
Reaching over, John gently touched Teyla’s shoulder. “Teyla,” he whispered.
She breathed deeply and rolled over in her sleep so that she was facing him. When he whispered her name again, her eyelids fluttered open. He could tell that it took a second for her to register that he had woken her, and when she did she smiled up at him sleepily. “Is it time to get up?” She asked, looking at him through half-lowered lashes.
John shook his head. “No,” he said quietly. “I just wanted to say-” His sentence died off as a surge of emotion hit him. His chest ached and his throat was suddenly tight. He swallowed once before trying again. “I love you.”
Teyla placed one hand gently on his cheek. “And I love you.”
He nodded. “I know. I just… I don’t want you to ever think otherwise.”
“Never,” she replied assuredly before pulling his head down to meet hers in a sweet kiss. When they broke apart she added, “And I do not wish for you to ever doubt my feelings.”
John leaned his forehead against hers. “Don’t worry, that’s never going to happen.”
She brushed her lips against his again. “Good.” She kissed him again. “You say that you love me…”
His throat was suddenly tight again. “More than anything else in the universe.”
“Show me,” she whispered against his lips, although he could tell that she did not need convincing. “Make love to me.”
Her hands began to run down his shirtless back. His body reacted instantaneously to her familiar touch. The heat was already beginning to rise between them. He kissed her deeply, seeking the entrance to her mouth that she so willingly gave him.
When he pulled back they were both breathing heavily. “Gladly,” he said before the power of speech was beyond him. He proceeded to show her just how much she meant to him, holding nothing back.
If tomorrow never came, there would be no regrets.
