Sidecar
It was early on a Saturday morning, except instead of sleeping in and enjoying what was supposed to be her day off, Detective Kate Beckett was sifting through background files for a suspect in her newest homicide case. Tax information, phone bills, credit card statements-if there was something there, she would find it. Most days Kate wouldn’t trade her job for anything in the world, but those cases that came in last thing on a Friday afternoon never served to further endear her to the career she had chosen.
Sighing, Kate glanced up at the clock on the wall. It was already a quarter past seven, where the hell were Ryan and Esposito? She was wondering about Castle too, though she would never tell him so. It seemed these days more than ever he was the first one there at the start of the day, eager to get going. Well, she could use his help now; it certainly wouldn’t hurt for him to help with the tedious work as well as the brilliant thinking.
Returning her attention to the sheets in front of her, Kate scanned through three pages of phone records. When she finished, she glanced through them again. The same number had shown up over ten times during the last month, and if she wasn’t mistaken it was the same number they’d seen on the victim’s phone record when they were looking last night. Kate reached for the folder with that information in order to double check, but she was interrupted by the arrival of her team.
“Good morning, Detective Beckett,” Castle said cheerfully as he walked over to her desk. Ryan and Esposito followed behind him. All three were holding takeout coffee cups. Castle had two cups, but placed one down on the desk in front of her. Then, without asking, he pushed aside the stack of papers she had been reaching for, and took their place sitting on her desk. “Thought you might like a latte.”
Kate sighed and reached around him, snatching the folder she wanted as she asked, “You bought us an espresso machine Castle, why do you need to go buy coffee?”
He shrugged. “Don’t need to, it’s just fun sometimes.” He smiled at her in what she assumed he considered to be a charming way. “Unless of course you don’t want it…” He reached to take back the cup, but she planted her hand on top of the lid firmly. A grin lit up his face. “Didn’t think so.”
Kate had to fight the urge to roll her eyes. So instead she ignored him and flipped open the folder, verifying that the phone number was indeed the same between the two records. She quickly scribbled it down on a post-it note while Castle watched her, apparently intrigued by something. Calling Esposito over, she passed him the note. “Run this number,” she told him. “It showed up on both the victim’s and the suspect’s phone records several times over the past month.”
Esposito nodded and got to work. Meanwhile Castle was still sitting on her desk, in the middle of her workspace. “Castle,” Kate said sharply. “Move.” To further emphasize her point she gave him a shove. Reluctantly he stood up, but he didn’t go any further than that. “You just going to stand there, or did you want to help solve this case?”
“Hmm?” he replied. Obviously he’d been caught up in his own little world. “Oh, yeah, in a second. I just have an idea to run by you.”
He looked at her for a moment, and Kate looked back, rather impatiently. “I’m not getting any younger.”
He grinned. “Well, when we were walking in here today we saw this one fine officer of the law ride by on one of those motorcycles.”
“You mean from the highway patrol?” She questioned, wondering where on earth he was going with this train of thought.
“Those very ones,” Castle replied smoothly.
“And…” She gestured with her hands for him to spit it out.
“And it was cool,” Castle said excitedly, almost like a little kid at Christmas. “It was all like vroom, vroom.”
Kate wanted to laugh-he was now pretending like he was riding one. He had rocked his weight back on his heels, and was kind of squatting a little. His hands were out in front of him as if they were on handlebars, and he was even twisting the fist on his right hand. Though to be perfectly honest the coffee cup in his left made it look all the more ridiculous.
“Very manly,” he added.
“Ah,” Kate replied. “Of course. Very manly.”
Castle smiled and stood back up straight. “Right, so we’re in agreement then?”
Kate leaned back in her chair, staring up at him. “No, I really don’t think we are.” She actually had no idea what he thought they were ‘in agreement’ about, but just from the look on his face she knew she should be saying no.
“Awe, come on,” he said, beginning to pout. “We totally need to get one. Can’t you just see it, riding up to crime scenes on a huge bike, all tough guy like.” He was back to pretending he was on the motorcycle, still looking ridiculous.
She gave him a little glare, and he stopped his miming. “You know what? I really can’t. It’s not exactly practical.”
“What are you talking about?!” he sounded sincerely put out now. “It’s awesome, and totally intimidating. You can even cut through traffic easier. What more could you want?”
“I don’t know,” she said in a falsely unsure voice. “How about an SUV, with at least two seats. After all, you’re not riding solo on these investigations Castle.”
He grinned at her. “Well, I’d already thought of the solution to that problem.”
Kate, not liking the mischievous look on his face, wasn’t sure if she even wanted to know the answer. For some unknown reason she asked anyway. “And what would that be?”
“We’d just have to get you a sidecar,” he stated cheerfully.
Kate heard a short burst of laughter coming from Ryan and Esposito in the background. Briefly she thought of how much fun it would be to strangle the writer in front of her. She settled for retorting, “And by that you mean we’d have to get you a sidecar.”
The tone of her voice left no room for argument and while Ryan and Esposito laughed harder, Castle merely nodded. “Of course,” he said slowly. “That’s exactly what I meant.” He smiled charmingly at her. “It’s always been my dream to have my own sidecar.”
She smiled at Castle. “Good.” Then reaching for a folder she had yet to crack open, she thrust it into his hands, catching him off guard and almost making him spill his coffee. “Now get to work, we have a murder to solve.”
Castle took the folder and gave her a mini salute with it. “Yes, boss.”
Kate sighed as she turned around to face her desk once again. As she began to read through more information on their suspect, she took a sip of her latte. She smiled-it actually was a pleasant way to start her morning, not that she would tell Castle that.
Her thoughts were interrupted by Esposito informing her that the phone number was registered to a man who’d been convicted of drug charges three years back, but had walked when there wasn’t enough evidence to sentence him.
“All right,” she said as she stood up and reached for her coat. “Let’s go.”
“Right behind you, boss,” she heard Castle say eagerly as she headed for the elevator. She couldn’t help but smile to herself and shake her head in amusement. That man…
