The Maltese Falcon

“What do you mean you’ve never seen The Maltese Falcon?!” Castle asked shocked as he followed Beckett out of the investigation room. Another officer was leading away their former suspect-now confessed murderer-to a holding cell.

“What it means, Castle,” Beckett said as she walked towards her desk. “Is that I’ve never seen it.”

“But that line back there,” he said, pointing behind him towards the interrogation room. “That was a perfect reference to a classic, with perfect delivery. I owned it.”

“And your point…”

“My point, Detective Beckett,” he said as he quickened his step and beat her to her desk, taking a seat on top. “Is that you did not get a chance to fully appreciate my talents because you’ve never seen the John Huston masterpiece.”

Beckett took a seat in her chair and shoved the overly worked up writer off of her workspace. He now stood looking down at her and appeared no less put out than he had a minute earlier. “We caught the murderer, Castle, isn’t that enough for you?”

He braced his hands on her desk, and leaned over her slightly. “No, it isn’t.”

Kate sighed and threw her hands up in the air. “What do you want me to do? Go watch the movie, then bring the suspect back in so we can reenact the entire interrogation and you can get your moment of glory?”

He pretended to ponder the idea for a moment, but replied with, “That’d be nice, but no.”

Kate fixed him with a stern look. “Good. So can we drop it then, and get back to doing some real work instead of playing movie quote genius.” Castle feigned a brief look of pain, which she ignored.

“Fine,” he assented. “But I’m telling you, it is a classic. Everyone should see it.”

Kate sighed. “Tell you what Castle, how about I promise you that I’ll watch it some day. Will that make you happy?”

He grinned broadly at her and stood up straight. “Friday night, eight o’clock, my place. You can bring the popcorn,” he stated before grabbing his empty coffee mug off her desk and heading for the espresso machine.

“Castle…” She protested weakly, but he was already out of earshot. Her head dropped back against the back of her chair. Kate never quite knew how she managed to get herself into these situations, but it always seemed to happen, time and time again. But then, maybe she didn’t mind quite so much as she let on.
