Here is what happened yesterday: Obama picked up enough votes from ethnic minorities and cargo-cult votes from people who think that twiddling the president's party membership will affect the macroeconomy to give him the edge. Otherwise, the breakdown looks a lot like it did for the last couple of presidential elections. There are reasons to be pleased at the way things worked out, but as far as large scale political trends go there's no reason to think it's more than stochastic fluctuation about a fairly fixed set point.
