I don't expect most people to help me and most people don't. The people I do expect to help me help almost without fail and people from whom I expect no assistance ignore me. Perhaps he was just a poor judge of character or engaged in wishful thinking.

Eh. A lot of context is being deliberately dropped here; the quote is from a conversation I had late last year which turned out to be an aggravatingly accurate piece of foreshadowing. There was definitely some wishful thinking involved, but more along the Taleb-esqe lines of underrating the expected value of correlated fails and leftfield boons.
