OMFG. Shade's Children is abso-fucking-lutely amazing. Garth Nix is fucking amazing. I would have his children, seriously, because they would be amazing authors. We would spawn a generation of superheroes, dictators and geniuses.
I haven't, mostly because of a strange confluence of events. I do everything in phases, reading is among them. My only living aunt, who is rather eccentric, sent Shade's Children to me right at the beginning of one of my non-reading phases. That was 2001. Enter this last summer, where I had a tiny reading phase. (By tiny, I only read about 8,000 pages. Well below my average)
I couldn't spare time to go to the library during the day, so I started my way through all these old books we have lying around. Somewhere in that pile was the forgotten book, Shade's Children, which I had never even opened because my aunt rarely sends anything that appeals to anyone besides her. The book broke the odds.
You need to read Sabriel by him. I love that book. I would lend it to you, but I only own it in German. I've got the sequel to it now though, but I don't really have the time to read it...
