I mean this as a first part of a long dissertation. I'd love some discussion, and not just Nick because he's predictable XD ( Read more... )

And this god has also spurred wars, discrimination, hate, close mindedness, regression, suicide, murderm death, and it goes on. People kill in the name of god, believing blindly, and not thinking for themselves like so many others. Granted, it is a crutch it does help alot of people, but it also hurt a lot of people. If I were god, it would be driving me insane, that is if you can assign human emotions to it. and these things do happen reguardless if the religion was here, and they have happened reguardless if This god exists or not. Part of the problem is that God itself is so undeisputable, what can be, is how we interpret "his word" and how we let it affect our actions. It's alright if you hate hispanics (we are entitled to our own opinions, even if they're wrong), so long as you don't let this affect your actions towars them. God affects people's actions A SHIT LOAD. a muther fucking truck load of it. I think that this is a problem, that it is too caught up in things when it should be a somewhat privete thing in practice, like sex ( ... )

I don't think a belief in God is the true cause of the wars and all that jazz. I think the cause of that war is people's bloody-mindedness, and since they are aware of the fact that they have no legitimate reason for their actions, they scream "God told me to hate you!"

In all 3 main religion's holy books, there are passages saying to in effect "love your enemy". Osama bin Laden tells his followers to kill Americans (and everyone else by the way) not because it is his stated religion's dogma to (in fact it is directly opposite Muhammed's teachings), but because he revels in death and killing. A truly godless, evil man.

The indisputability is key, I think a better term is "untransparency". Nobody can truthfully say to know what God says to other people (if indeed God says anything), so people are free to assign responsibility for anything and everything to God.

I may add, the Crusades were caused not by religion, but by European ruler's need to distract the unruly peasants from their own hardships; to direct their rage away from the rulers.

But it was in the name of God. A Facade.

I'm not saying all religion, or all religous people are this way. It's mostly the fundamentalist. Th question is, if there was no religion, or knowledge of God would these things still happen? even if they are a mask, would the people be as bold without a God to hide bedind? Well I can't answer those, but they are something to think about. I don't believe that is was just man's will or just religion, I think it was both, and the stuff may not have been carried out of one of those was missing.

In regards to the war question, its the people not the religion that is the problem. Jesus says love your enemy etc, when he died he still didnt hate or lash out at those who harmed him. This is how a "true" christian would react in theory, they would live following the word of jesus and doing as he did. The thing is: so few actually can do this, most of religion especially in america are only religous in their church. Once they get outside of their church, they will (for the most part, there are some exceptions) do many things that their religion in the purest sence would frown upon ( ... )

If it comes down to it, what we need to force down peoples throats is not to force things down people's throats, if you get what I mean ( ... )

Religion - religion beliefs and worship: people's beliefs and opinions concerning the existence, nature, and worship of a deity or deities, and divine involvement in the universe and human life

That's a direct quote from a dictionary. A problem we have today (sorry to use you as an example) is that people like to skew definitions of words to fit their point. Sometimes we don't really realize it because it can make sense. Evelution is NOT about where we came from or why we are here; however, it is about how we got here, so besides the fact that it has nothing to do with the devine, it didn't even fit your own definition.

Damn, nick.. I expected 10 paragraphs, and you only hit 8. Poor showing!

The pakistani-indian emnity is caused by pakistan. They're a muslim nation... and so not peaceful like a true Dharmic nation. India isn't truly Dharmic either, but it's close.

I've read the entirety of the Bible, probably 35% of the Qua'ran, and half of the Talmud. Haven't read the Torah yet.. I prolly should tho.

I list Judaism as higher in importance then Buddhism because of the pivotal role its members have played in world events practically since it's inception.

Besides, in older times every nation in south-east asia considered themselves Buddhist of some variety or other and there were plenty of wars.

Ptsh. Eight is good enough. So is a more than two-week delay in responding.

I'm not sure to place the blame on Pakistan alone is fair.. usually things are two-sided, even if slightly.

Not touching the reading of historical religious documents.. I've done the Tao Te Ching.. that's my bit. The others I've barely glanced at.

I think Judaism just gets more credit in certain parts of the world.. I can't say for sure.. but, say.. in Siberia? I doubt it matters as much as over here. Maybe I'm wrong, and it could well be.. just seems sort of a reporting bias. Also I'm sure that people hate Africa works itself in there. Just because.

And, good for the south-eastern Asian countries. I don't really want to look back and see what I said.. so.. I dunno. Maybe just the standby 'Grraaaoooraaawrrgghhhrrr people are stupid' bit.

Yeah, that'll do.
