paradigm_twist [Y][FF] Summary: He acted nonchalant to the man who says his feelings too easily, who states them without hesitation, who is willing to give everything to mere chance. A chance he's reluctant to give.
---
Yesung flipped through the papers when the chair skidded, announcing the presence of the man who briskly sat down beside him. Even without the exaggerated motion, Yesung still knew exactly who it was.
"What do you want now?"
"You. Obviously." Kyuhyun replied. "Unfortunately that's the one thing you won't give me."
Yesung ignored his statement, just as he always had. "If there's nothing else, leave."
Kyuhyun glowered. "So cruel. Sometimes I wonder why I like you so much."
"I wondered about that too." Yesung murmured, shuffling the papers around in frustration, in a fail attempt to complete the work assigned to him. The intern rubbed his eyes, his patience wearing thin when he heard the chair skidded again. He heard a plop down beside him. He opened his eyes and found himself looking straight into his eyes, face within millimeters of his face.
He gave no reaction, used to his unpredictable actions. "Why are you so close?" Yesung asked calmly.
"Because I want us to get closer." Kyuhyun smirked. Yesung rolled his eyes and turned away. "Why the face?"
"I'm mourning." Yesung replied, tidying some of the papers.
Kyuhyun asked quizzically. "What died?"
"Whatever is left of my sanity and your manhood." Kyuhyun narrowed his eyes at his statement as Yesung laughed.
Yesung noticed that Kyuhyun's expression had softened almost immediately. He recognized it because it was one of those looks that he had often seen. The very one he had grown used to over the years.
He turned away awkwardly as he cleared his throat.
"Now I remember." Kyuhyun replied. "You should smile more often."
"I do. Just not when you're around."
This time Kyuhyun didn't retort. Instead he pondered for a bit when he asked quite suddenly. "Only when you're around Sungmin?"
Yesung froze. "W-what?"
Kyuhyun exhaled sharply as he crossed his arms. "That friend of yours you're always hanging around-"
"I know who that is."
"You keep laughing when you're around him," Kyuhyun said as he rose up from his seat, muttering under his breath. "Annoying."
Yesung tried to refocus on the work at hand, but Kyuhyun laid his hands on top of them. Yesung didn't dare look up.
"I do like you," Kyuhyun reminded.
"I know." Yesung said quietly.
"Really? Because it seems like you choose to ignore that fact."
Yesung didn't reply as Kyuhyun left the large office. He sighed as he leaned his chin on his palm, knowing full well he was honest.
Kyuhyun had confessed to him repeatedly over the years and he had often wondered when he would simply give up. He recalled all the times he had simply chose not to answer any of them, but Kyuhyun had never once relented.
He also knew that his claim that he solely 'liked' him was only an inkling of his true feelings. Kyuhyun purposely played down the full extent of his feelings. He may have bluntly voiced them but he still held back that one word. The one he dared not say.
Every time Yesung caught him staring, he could see the honest glint that appeared in his softened gaze; the way he smiled because of him. He always knew that his feelings were much stronger than just mere 'like'.
Despite what Kyuhyun may have claimed, it was impossible to ignore that fact.
-
He glanced at the papers in his hands and rushed through the corridors.
Unfortunately, he was forced to stop as he looked at the pile of papers falling to the floor. He was usually quite keen to his surroundings, even when carrying dozens of papers and assignments.
So when someone had decided to halt in front of him and purposely made him to crash into him, Yesung bit his cheek to stop himself from cursing at whoever it was. And when he recognized him, he had to refrain himself from nearly assaulting him.
"What do you want?" Yesung asked, disdain clearly evident his voice. Kyuhyun didn't reply and studied his movements as he quickly gathered the fallen papers. "Do you want to say something or is this a new way of pursuing me?"
No answer. He shook his head in annoyance as he rose up with the mess in his hands and used his occupied hands to open the doors.
"I don't have time for your games." Yesung said as he walked into the room, placing the papers on the desk.
"Don't choose him."
Yesung furrowed his eyebrows at his statement, deciding instead to simply ignore him and set out to complete his task. He felt his shoulder being pulled back and he turned to meet narrowing eyes.
"Don't ignore me." Kyuhyun warned.
"I'm busy."
"The same old excuse." Kyuhyun grumbled.
"You just never listen." Yesung retorted as he tried to return to his work when Kyuhyun pulled his arm back forcibly. Doing that only annoyed him further. "You're acting childish."
"If it gets you to listen, I don't care how I'm perceived."
Yesung found that slightly ironic. Most people were wary of how they were viewed by the ones they liked. In Kyuhyun's case, his motive only blinded him from that perception.
"You don't have the right to dictate who I choose." Yesung said clearly.
"I don't." Kyuhyun agreed. Yesung felt the firm grip tightened on his arm "Just," Kyuhyun said exasperatedly. "Don't."
His eyes betrayed him. They shifted from the papers to his pleading expression.
"Don't choose him."
He hated this the most. He hated how Kyuhyun became so vulnerable so easily and how he was the sole reason for it.
"I'm not choosing him." He found himself saying. He ignored Kyuhyun's relieved sigh as he continued. "But just because I'm not choosing him doesn't mean-"
"I know what it doesn't mean." Kyuhyun said, unable to hold back a hopeful smile. "It might not mean anything to you, but it still gives me a chance and that's everything to me."
Yesung forced himself to focus on his work, acting nonchalant as he always had whenever Kyuhyun acted this way.
"Don't be so confident." He murmured.
"I'm not." Kyuhyun said with a small smile as he loosened his grip. "I'm just hopeful."
Yesung turned away from that expression, aware of the overwhelming part of him that remained pessimistic. But beneath the facade, hid a small part that hoped somehow that he was right.
-
Yesung slowly stirred awake and took in his surroundings. He barely recognized it, but it looked like a bedroom. He rubbed sleep away from his eyes and realized that the room wasn't his.
That realization jolted him to sit up abruptly and caused immediate dizziness as he gripped his head in pain.
"Don't do that."
Yesung widened his eyes and peered through the darkness of the room, barely able to make out an outline when he heard a click. The lamp beside him turned on and his eyes trailed to Kyuhyun who sat on the bed beside him.
"What am I doing here?" He asked, afraid of the thought of Kyuhyun and him alone in a dark room. Had he finally decided to take matters into his own hands?
"You overworked yourself and collapsed," Kyuhyun said simply. "This is easily the least attractive part about you. Though... I'd be lying if I said it didn't catch my attention in the beginning."
"And here I thought it was my eyes." Yesung said sarcastically as he slumped back against the bed.
"Your eyes are nice. But nothing is as attractive as your voice." Kyuhyun said, suddenly reaching for a wet towel and gingerly dabbed his forehead. "My heart's ready to do somersaults whenever you speak."
Yesung grimaced at his words, knowing that it was empty of any sarcasm and that he was serious.
"Why do you always say things like that?"
"What other way is there?" Kyuhyun placed the towel on top of the bowl.
"You're always using the same antics on me, not once realizing they don't work on me."
"If you were kind enough, you would tell me what does work." Kyuhyun chided. "Only you're never that nice. You only care about what will benefit you. That and you're too much of a workaholic and quite selfish for the most part."
"I can see why you fell for me." Yesung muttered bitterly.
"They're really not attractive qualities at all," Kyuhyun assured. "But you're also caring, considerate of other people and do your best to take away their burden and add them to your own."
Yesung furrowed his eyebrows. "Isn't that a contradiction?"
"Maybe." Kyuhyun said as he gently swept the hair away from his eyes. Yesung stared at his hand that continued to act so gently towards him, even as he pulled back and laid his hand across his lap.
Kyuhyun met his eyes that watched him, offering a smile of his own.
He didn't understand how Kyuhyun could possibly know all his flaws, all his horrible traits but still have such strong feelings in spite of them.
Yesung broke the eye contact. He turned to his side; away from him and closed his eyes.
He didn't say anything nor gave any reaction. He knew Kyuhyun was frustrated by his silence but chose not to pry any further. Yesung heard the shuffling of footsteps as Kyuhyun gathered his things and got up. He kept his eyes close even as the door closed; signaling his departure.
Yesung took a deep breath, finally able to relax as he turned onto his back, placing a hand over his eyes. He swept away the few strands that covered them. He sighed as he realized it wasn't the same.
Yesung felt oddly cold without his warm touch.
-
He never should have ranted to him, to divulge anything because in the end Sungmin didn't give him any sympathy. Not that he deserved any, but he hoped that at least he could receive some understanding. All he did however, was give Kyuhyun another supporter.
Give him a chance.
He couldn't answer.
Why?
Because he's...
Because Kyuhyun was...
Yesung cringed at his own speechlessness from that simple question. One that he was able to answer so easily before. But now as he tried to recall his past reasons, he found none of them credible. None of them viable enough to support his reason for rejecting his advances.
He sighed as he glanced at the task assigned to him. He chose to forget his issues and focus instead on the work that his managers had given him.
He turned at the corner and stepped in the hallway when he froze.
Kyuhyun was talking rather intimately to another intern, laughing at some joke and his smile never leaving his face.
He immediately stepped away and hid behind the corner. He placed a hand over his chest and clenched his fist. The tightening in his chest was uncalled for.
"Yesung?"
He barely looked up at Kyuhyun who appeared by his side as he leaned in and peered at his expression. "What's wrong?"
Yesung also hated how easily Kyuhyun was able to read his face, able to detect what he wanted to hide, not bothered to ignore him when he wasn't able to.
He chose not to answer as he walked away from him, barely caring about the crushed papers in his hands. He was pulled back harshly. Yesung narrowed his eyes darkly. "Stop it."
"You don't make things any easier." Kyuhyun countered.
"I don't. But you like to make things difficult for yourself don't you?" Yesung shook his head. "Just leave me alone." He said as he turned away, wanting to dispel that memory from his mind at all costs. He hated how much that alone bothered him. It shouldn't have.
The papers in his hands fell to the ground when he was pulled back again. Kyuhyun's arms held him tightly as he hugged him from the back.
He stiffened and pushed away his arms forcefully, turning angrily around as he bellowed. "When will you understand?! I want you to leave me alone!"
"You know I can't do that." Kyuhyun said defiantly.
Yesung sneered. "I know. No matter what I say or do, you never once relented. Honestly, I'm sick and tired of it. I don't want to see you. Hear from you. Or have anything more to do with you. I'm done."
Kyuhyun gulped slightly, clenching his own fist. "You're a real jerk."
"Like I care what you think of me." Yesung said bitingly. He walked past him briskly, ignoring the papers on the ground as he continued walking straight ahead.
He hated how his emotions controlled him, his reaction. How it made him snapped.
The emotions spurred from that scene of the two together. And that was what irked him the most.
-
They had since started to act more like strangers, though he knew it was mostly his own fault. He acted as if nothing happened. Even when he was given some assignments to work with with him. He did everything he could to act as if they were nothing more than colleagues.
He was aware of the pain in his eyes when he acted this way. How cold he had become but this was for the best. He couldn't become as hot-headed as before.
Yesung stepped on the small ladder as he reached for the items on the top shelf. He vaguely heard the doors sliding open and looked back at Kyuhyun who stepped forward.
"What is it that you need?" He asked monotonously.
Kyuhyun winced. "I can get it myself." He replied.
Yesung barely acknowledged that answer and reached for another box. He heard the doors close when the box slipped from his fingers.
He lost his footing and fell backwards onto the floor. He groaned at the harsh impact and the awkward landing. He winced as he slowly got up, doing his best to clean up the mess he made.
But even as he walked home from the office, he felt pain in both his legs. His legs buckled before he could even reach his apartment and he cursed under his breath that he wasn't able to stand up properly. He sat up slightly as he massaged his legs profusely, desperate for them to get better on the cold pavement.
He was aware of the footsteps that came closer. He barely glanced up as Kyuhyun lowered himself beside him. He couldn't say anything when he suddenly picked him up.
He hardly knew what to say at times like these.
His eyes were focused solely on Kyuhyun's blank expression, but he was unable to look anymore so he turned his eyes away. Kyuhyun carried him until they reached his apartment but he didn't stop there. Instead, he carried him into his apartment and helped Yesung settled on his couch. Once he was comfortable, Kyuhyun took the liberty to cook something for him despite his protests.
No matter what he said, Kyuhyun had simply refused to leave.
Kyuhyun sat down beside him on the couch as he stirred the food in the bowl. He then held out a spoon and gave an expectant look. Yesung cringed.
"I can feed myself." He murmured as he reached for the spoon. Kyuhyun pulled back. They played this come and go game for a few minutes when Yesung gave up once again. He could never compete with Kyuhyun's stubbornness.
He ate from the spoon. Each time he was fed, he thought he caught a glimpse of the satisfied look on Kyuhyun's face.
When they were finally done, Yesung looked around for a drink, parched when he saw an opened bottle of water sitting on the table.
Before he could even ask the question, Kyuhyun gave him the drink. Yesung tried his best not to look at him as he drank wordlessly from the bottle. But he couldn't stay silent when he noticed the smug look on his face.
"What is it?" He asked.
Kyuhyun pointed at the bottle. Yesung gave him a blank look. "That," Kyuhyun explained. "was an indirect kiss."
Yesung blinked and scoffed. "And you're happy because of that?"
"How could I not be?" Kyuhyun reasoned. "This is as close as I can get to getting an actual kiss from you."
Yesung turned away awkwardly. It continued to faze him at just how honest he could be. His eyes followed Kyuhyun as he stood up and walked into the kitchen to wash the dishes.
Yesung drank more of the water and ignored the passing thought. One that reminded him just how he couldn't be honest with himself.
When Kyuhyun reached for his bag beside him, Yesung stood up slowly from the couch with every intention of seeing him off.
"Don't." Kyuhyun warned, but he could hardly heed his warning when his knees buckled once again. Fortunately he was caught by his arms before he even reached the floor.
Yesung was sure he could hear his erratic heartbeat as he laid against his chest. It didn't matter that they know each other for years now. It seemed like he still had the same effect on him.
"Please be more careful." Kyuhyun said softly, his hold on him tightening slightly, meeting his gaze as he said it.
Give him a chance.
He shouldn't.
Why not?
Yesung stiffened in his hold, clenching his hands around his shirt as he mumbled something incoherently. Kyuhyun leaned in closer to hear his quiet voice.
Yesung barely looked at him as he repeated. "One chance."
Kyuhyun blinked as he didn't understand his sudden ultimatum.
"One chance at a date," He added. "That's it. I don't care how unfair it may seem to you but that's all I'm willing to give."
He stayed silent, awaiting for his ecstatic reaction or maybe anger at his restrictions.
Instead Kyuhyun's hands brushed against his cheeks, cradling them as a rare and warm smile played on his lips.
He remained silent as Kyuhyun hugged him tightly. He just closed his eyes as he allowed himself to be held.
He had only meant for it to be sole chance to open Kyuhyun's eyes and make him realize how futile it was to be patient with him, to go after him so persistently over the years. Maybe now, he'd see how worthless it was to wait for him, to even attempt to.
But that chance spurred countless of others. From the days where they worked as interns, to the present, in their more prominent positions. Despite their promotion in status, nothing had really changed.
His stubbornness never relented. Even now the glint in his eyes still remained, continuously stealing glances when he assumed that Yesung was unaware during their days spent deeply immersed in work.
Every so often Kyuhyun was still hesitant, timid as he kissed him on the lips tentatively, as if afraid Yesung would pull back at any moment. It's only then that Yesung would remind him of what he finally has, crushing their lips together as they both battled for dominance.
In the many kisses they shared, the chances lengthened as they spent their nights in the bedroom. It was only then that Kyuhyun was able to enjoy the sultry sound of his voice when he hears his name cried out repeatedly. Basking in the afterglow as Yesung laid in his warm embrace, possessively held both within and beyond the bedroom.
Even as they walked side by side along the streets, Kyuhyun still held on to his hand securely, daringly giving everything to chance.
