His Defeat, Their Victory
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Donghae/Eunhyuk
Genre: AU!Romance
Summary: It'd be nice to revisit the past, if only Donghae gave him a chance to forget.

// Memories //

Eunhyuk is greeted by a pair of cold lips. He winces awake from his conscious nap and sees Donghae hovering just above him.

“Why are you so irresistible to me?”

Eunhyuk keeps a hand on his chest to keep Donghae from stealing another kiss, keeping a good distance between them that earns a frown on the man’s face. “Did you even shower?”

“Of course,” Donghae demonstrated his dripping wet hair and the loose bathrobe he was in. When a drop fell against Eunhyuk’s cheek, Donghae gently wiped it away with his forefinger. His elbows dug in deep on the bed on either side of Eunhyuk, who was slowly falling back asleep.

Eunhyuk opened his eyes at Donghae's random chuckle. He was considerably used to it, but he could feel his shoulders shaking. “What is it?”

“Remembering the time we went to the beach, and you fell overboard.” Eunhyuk glowered as Donghae smiled, “I know, I know, you were trying to save me. In the end I had to give you CPR.”

“Which was completely unnecessary....And... Well, I thought you were drowning.”

“I'm the water polo player if you recall.” Donghae teases. Eunhyuk rolls his eyes and attempts to fall back asleep, Donghae’s body heat acting as a warm blanket when once again, that hateful chuckle returns.

Donghae snorted, "...remembering the time we went to the park and you fell off the fake horse."

Eunhyuk sometimes loathed Donghae's vast memory and stares accusingly right into his boyfriend’s rounded eyes. "Can't you ever remember the nice things I do, rather than the ones I'd rather forget?"

"But I like remembering them. They make me smile."

Eunhyuk sighed, deciding to give up on his nap as he rubbed his eyes. “Did you go to the aquatic center today?”

“Yup, we had a friendly match with the other guys there.”

“Guessing you won?”

Donghae smugly held his head up high, “Of course.” Donghae got off of him, settling on the edge of the bed as Eunhyuk stood up. “You would be surprised when I tell you who I was against.”

Eunhyuk just assumed it’d be more of his college friends, but as he steps toward their closet, his eyes rounded as he quickly pulled apart Donghae’s robe.

“Well, you’re being forward today.”

Eunhyuk nearly gaped at the various scratches covering across Donghae’s shoulders and arms, it was quite easy for some opponents to do this under the guise of blinding water. “Who?”

“I’m sure you can guess who I came across there.”

Eunhyuk scoffed, “He’s still upset? It’s been years since college.”

Donghae shrugs, and nods understandably as his eyes distanced. “If someone stole you from me, I’d do more than just a few scratches.”

“Duly noted.” Eunhyuk didn’t like the look of those fresh wounds and reminded himself to buy some bandages. He keeps looking when he eventually shifts upwards, realizing Donghae staring rather intently at him back. “What?”

“Do you know how intense your eyes get when you focus on something? How easily excited you can be and downcast in a matter of moments, I always thought it was so cute of you-”

“As you keep telling me.”

“And it’s truer than any other time I’ve said it. Those expressions of yours kept me going at every match... even though you were mostly upset when I won.” He chuckled, “I’m glad we always had meets with your school’s team, I could see you anytime.”

"You're aware I was there to support my boyfriend?"

"Ex. And at first," Donghae said gleefully, triumphant even as that familiar glint formed in his eyes. "Then you came for me."

Eunhyuk tried not to look at him in the eye, feeling bashful, because of all the things Donghae could possibly brag about, his awards, his championships and winning serves, his only victory he continues to speak of is the day Eunhyuk became his.

He was sure he’d never seen the player any happier than the moment after the season’s final match, when Eunhyuk had awkwardly stepped to him on the pool’s edge of the empty college pool area, and confessed.

Donghae’s arms embrace his shoulders, pulling him close. Donghae’s eyes close in pure bliss, “I can’t complain, it really was my fault.”

“At least I ended it cleanly with him,” Eunhyuk remembers, not really wanting to remember that particular painful breakup. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

Donghae’s a little too elated whenever Eunhyuk becomes concerned, and hugs Eunhyuk’s even tighter as an answer.

“Go change,” Eunhyuk reprimands, Donghae listens and backs away. Eunhyuk turns to leave the room, “I’ll be back, going to the pharmacy to-”

Eunhyuk just barely dodges as Donghae attempts to steal another kiss. “Donghae!” Eunhyuk snaps when the other pulls away, wearing that same playful grin as he hurries to their closet.

His smiles are always egotistical, begging to be punched, and he’s sure his ex had the same sentiments as others seems to. Not even Donghae’s rivals could remain friendly with him for long. Eunhyuk sometimes wondered at what point he even began liking him.

The day he confessed however, he remembers the surprised look in the player’s face, drenched in water with a towel around his shoulders, he’s almost at a loss that it makes Eunhyuk just a little self-conscious.

When Donghae finally regained himself, his lips formed into the sweetest smile he’d seen, gratefully happy of the words he’d always wanted to hear. The latter still recalls his frigid embrace and the near cold he got after.

When Eunhyuk returns from the pharmacy, Donghae finally manages to kiss him at Eunhyuk’s expense just as he closes the front door. “You’re still too cold,” Eunhyuk quietly complains, just as always does, and it doesn’t faze Donghae in the least bit. Eunhyuk recognizes his distracted eyes, even if they were trained on him, "What is it now?"

"Just nostalgic." An answer given to Eunhyuk’s chagrin.

"Is there anything else you can ever think about?"

"Nope," Donghae said, "remembering... the first time you rejected me."

"Why is that worth remembering?" Eunhyuk asks uncomfortably, he had rejected Donghae when he was with his ex at the time, but that eventually changed. Amongst their better memories, why was that the one he had to make him recall?

It doesn’t seem to pain Donghae at all, “Because,” he begins, completely at ease, “that was when I knew I'd do anything for you to be mine.”

Unwillingly, against all his best efforts, it warms his heart. Donghae was truly the victor and Eunhyuk knew long ago that he’d have to accept this defeat, and finds unlike many others that come across Donghae's path, he doesn’t mind it one bit.
