Would you believe me if I said that I actually like Kate?
The way this fandom..."likes" Kate, this was a shocker. I was wondering if there were anyone who liked her. (Personally, I have no problem with her. Just didn't understand the heat. *shrugs*)

And I've actually not noticed any heat (that said I've only been in the fandom since about November). It seems more like a general apathy towards her to me. Did I miss something?

And you're not the only one who likes Kate. We never DO get a clear answer as to whether or not she's leading Neal around -- everything she does could be interpreted two ways, either a master plotter maneuvering him for her own gain or someone trying to do the best she can when trapped in a horrible situation. And as someone pointed out to me, the other day after the finale, we keep forgetting that Kate isn't Neal -- she probably has nowhere near his skills and so maybe the mess things turned into was not really all her fault.

Honestly? Sure. I was never really that invested in her either way. I was far too into watching Peter and Neal's BFF-ness, because they were so much fun.
I know Peter never seemed to like her in canon, thought she was using Neal to get what was left of the many things he'd stolen/forged, and you played on that really well here in the prologue. My own impressions, though, were that of someone just trying to survive. She worked for Adler and had it pretty good there, but when he pulled his scheme, she lost everything. She seemed to be attached enough to Neal at that point to go into a life of crime with him, learning the tricks of the trade that he (and Mozzie) taught her ( ... )

And I love the mystery of Kate, how Neal is so desperately in love with her an Peter really doesn't like her. In that area, I'm playing up canon with this fic. As for anything else, well...

I like Kate too, for the record. The writers did her no favors when they "answered" all our questions in Forging Bonds. We still don't know her motives, we still don't know what t he hell she was thinking in clearly aligning herself with and trusting Adler, and I really do want to know if she was leading Neal on or looking out for him.

I don't think the writers will ever 'answer' the Mystery of Kate, or ever even intended to - much better for ratings to leave her up in the air rather than set her in stone in one direction or the other. I'll be honest, I don't have much intention of giving an answer here...but who knows ;)

And I hope those ideas prove as fruitful for you as they have for me. :)
