writers advice
....as this is currently bugging the everloving out of me, I'm posting it.
Before I start, let me state a couple things:
I am not homosexual, nor am I homophobic. I happen to believe that love is love and who it is doesn't really matter. However, that is a rant for a different day and my other account.
I use the word "gay" here not as a derogatory term, but because it's a lot easier to say "gay sex" than "homosexual sex", and I know that everyone reading this will know what I'm talking about without having to look up what "homosexual" means.
I've been reading a lot of Avengers fanfiction right now and noticed a trend among Steve Rogers/Tony Stark (or the other way around) fanfiction. There is something that many of them tend to get very, very wrong.
So many authors have Steve accepting that he's gay for Tony without much issue, and getting to the sex fairly quickly. While I admit that these can be good stories, this is not an accurate start to their relationship. There is no way Steve would be so accepting of the fact that he's gay, and as far as we know he was a virgin when he got frozen.
These people need to go look up what the 1940's thought of things, and apply that to Steve's thoughts.
What I do know says that sex before marriage wasn't exactly a good thing, though it was worse on the girl if she got pregnant out of wedlock than for the guy who got her pregnant. Steve was such a good guy, and wasn't exactly what the girls were looking for, so I doubt he had the chance to have sex before he was frozen.
This ties into the gay bit because, really, if he's never had guy/girl sex, why would you think he knows about how to have guy/guy sex?
I haven't looked up what the 1940's thoughts on gays were yet, but I do know that it was not acceptable back then. Knowing that it's generally acceptable now will only do so much for Steve, and I doubt that he would be able to accept he's gay without some angst or whatever because of the views he grew up with.
