I don't have ranchsliders, but when i was small my parents did, and i remember Mum using the wooden safety gate as it fit just the same. No harm in trying it out :)

There might be an example here http://www.designersecurity.com/ I saved that link ages ago. You could use chairs lying down until you get something. I might be a while before he'll actually try to crawl outside if he has just figured out how to crawl.
