You didn't let him down, hon. You did what you and Phil thought was best, and I reckon it was. No one wants their child to suffer. He indeed was given peace, and within it he knew that his parents did what they did out of love. *snugglehugs*
Of all the babies that have a "miraculous" story, there are thousands, perhaps even more than that, that weren't so miraculous. These babies are many times kept on the brink of death, in so much pain that we would never think to allow an animal to live that way - it would be cruel. Even many of the "miraculous" recovery stories mean only that the child lived, not the repercussions of what the child had to go through and what now may never be a "normal" life.
I don't condemn these parents who try and try and never give up, even though their babies may be in a lot of pain - it is only natural I think, to want to fight for the survival of your child. However, I think it takes a much more mature individual to realize keeping the child alive is selfish and sometimes cruel. I think you did the right thing for your baby - you gave him life, did the best you could to save him and give him the best life possible, and let him die peacefully, because you loved him.
You're right....I guess the guilt I feel is because its coming up to the anniversary of his death and I am faced with the memories and the what ifs. Thank you *hugs*
