Next Quarter

So I just received my teaching assignment for next quarter and it's English 367, the junior level composition class as opposed to 110 the freshman level (what I normally teach). I haven't qualified to do it yet, I was going to do that next week. I'm not sure how that's going to work out ( Read more... )

BRADBURY BRADBURY BRADBURY!!!!

sorry--
i just love the man of metaphor so much...
and i don't think enough students read writing like that--
pungent and beautiful.

trust in the Lord, o joshwa--
and though the path is always difficult,
He will make it straight,
yeh?

i'll be praying praying praying for you--
teaching can be such hell
and so critical--
pray for your 'kids'--
love them.

we love you, josh.

and you're amazing.

I'll think some more, but a few quick ideas are bradbury, Farenheit 451 is nice; don't forget about the two biggest technological distopias 1984 and Brave New World.

I gotta go, but like I said I'll think about it.

Good points, Josh. One last thing, something I learned from a professional apologist:

Truth can be used in two different ways to enlighten the masses. The first is to use it as a sledgehammer. You find out what the poor dumb pagan believes, and then you say, "That's interesting...but guess what?" as you bash them over the head with the Truth, destroying their ideology. Momentarily satisfying, but usually counter-productive. The other way is to use the Truth as a crowbar. You listen to what they believe, then say, "That's interesting. What do you think of...?" and use your crowbar to pry up a few boards, letting some light in.

Which is honestly the more loving? The pat answer is, "The crowbar, of course," but that won't always be the case. Sometimes, someone needs a good knock in the head. We only remind you, commission you, to trust to God's wisdom and not your own, to seek the Truth in love, and to wield the Truth as a sword -- striking sometimes with the edge, and sometimes with the flat.

there's certainly been alot of heated discussion throughout this post, so i thought'd i'd set a few things to rest. to do so, I'll require two quotations from my (and your) betters:

What rolls down stairs
alone or in pairs
Rolls over your neighbor's dog?
What's great for a snack
and fits on your back?
It's Log, Log, Log!
It's Log, Log,
it's big, it's heavy,
it's wood.
It's Log, Log, it's better than bad,
it's good!
-Blammo

the way down is also the way up.
-heraclitus

I have a certain albeit sinister hope that this is the first time the two have ever been quoted together. hold on...nope, google has nine hits. damn. well, enjoy nonetheless.
