I don't usually care about celebrity deaths, even of those I admire--it just doesn't seem immediate or something. But for some reason Levon's death hit me really hard.
I know what you mean. Most celebrity deaths have no effect on me (maybe I'm just a hard-hearted bitch), but I wrote about how Davy Jones' death hit me. He wasn't the greatest musician or my favorite singer--even my favorite Monkee for that matter--but the music was such an integral part of my life, it felt a little like losing a friend.
I always admired Levon Helm, maybe because he starred in one of my favorite movies of all time, and I was really rooting for him. He had beaten the odds with his first bout of cancer, and I thought he'd be around for much longer. It's like, for me, his death touches upon our mortality--not my own, but of those close to me.
Anyway, it sounds trite, but true, at least we still have the music.

Sadly, too many greats have been leaving us recently.
