While "the Word was God" is by far the most common English translation, non-Trinitarian groups such as the Jehovah's Witnesses (in their Emphatic Diaglott and New World Translation) and Unitarians (in Thomas Belsham's modification of William Newcome's version) translate "the Word was a god."
