"She Stoops To Conquer"

So, since I'm in a holding pattern at work and it's almost lunchtime. I'll try to do a more detailed report of the play itself.

Warning there may be spoilers, enter at your own risk. :)

So, I got to the theater pretty quickly from work. Arrived about 6:30. Saw a few familiar peeps at a table and said hi I'll be right back as I ran to the restroom. We sat around and talked a bit waiting for people to show up. I tried to sketch some patrons while waiting. I'm trying to get better drawing more often. I usually feel self conscience drawing in public, trying to overcome that. Lord knows I need the practice.

More familiar fans started to show up around 7pm. There were lots of "Hi how are you?" going around. At about a quarter till eight they let us in, and it was just waiting for the play to start. I noticed one of the mics in the center was really tall compared to the others, and when the actors came on stage I discovered why. Adam Godley is really tall.

The play starts out a little dry. It isn't until the mistaken identities start to take shape and things start rolling downhill that the humor momentum picks up speed. Matthew Wolf is in the production playing Mr. Hastings a friend to James' Mr. Marlowe. The two of them play well off each other. Rosalind Ayres as Mrs. Hardcastle is wonderful as her character gets more enraged and lively as the play goes on. She adds some great physical acting to her part as well. Joanne Wooley's Kate is played a bit straight. Not sure if that's the way the character is or her performance. There are several larger than life characters in the play I suppose it's smart to have a more subtle character. James as Marlowe is a bit stiff in the beginning being a proper English gentleman, but the scene in which he stutters while trying to talk with Kate is hilarious. And when he tries to seduce the barmaid, who is actually Kate in disguise, he's very sexy. Makes you wish you were the barmaid. :)

Adam does a fantastic job with Tony, Mrs. Hardcastle's son which she smothers. The scenes between the two of them are great. At one point Tony breaks out in a son at the local pub and the entire cast sings along as the pub patrons.

I'm leaving out many cast members simply because I left my program in the car and also, it's a huge cast. And I never do long reports so I don't want to review the entire play.

Last year Friday night was the night everything clicked and the performance was top notch. It will be interesting to see which performance this time will be the magical performance.

After the performance everyone went out to the lobby to wait and see if he would come out. After a short time he popped out with Patricia, said it has been a 12 hour day for him so he can't stay but he wants to give everyone a hug. Said thanks for coming and something about we either brought great energy to the play or something similar. I was seated at a table behind a bunch of people and Graysunrise, after she got her hug, was a bit don't forget Angela as I was making my from behind the tables to get a quick hug. I was able to get a hug, not going to turn that down, and told him great job. After he made his way around he was all thanks bye and took off back to the stage elevator. Patricia was just standing back while all this was going on and he left so quickly it took her a few seconds to realize he left and then followed. She might have waved bye or we said bye or we all chuckled at him disappearing so quickly, I don't remember. I just found it funny, he was all hi, thanks, hug really quickly and then poof he was gone almost like a magician. But it was really sweet of him to come out at all and I'm glad no one tried to keep him longer and just accepted the hug said a word or two and let him leave to go home.

I didn't stay much longer after that. I wanted to get home maybe grab some food and go to bed hopefully before midnight so I wouldn't be exhausted at work. Made my way to the freeway to discover the on ramp was closed. So I took the scenic route of Mulholland and Bevelry Glen to make my way home. Never drove that way before or not Mulholland, Beverly Glen I used to take all the time to UCLA. Seeing the lights of the valley was pretty from the top of the hill. The freeway would have been faster though. Stupid Caltrans.

And that was the play on Wednesday night.
