I suppose I should post this here for anyone on my LJ who is not on my facebook. Which may or may not be many of you. I honestly don't know.
I got a new birdie this weekend. A parakeet. I haven't had a parakeet for about 6 years. I really missed having a bird I can tame and interact with. Finches are cute, but you can't do anything but stare at them.
The lady at the bird store said she was 60% sure it was a girl, but I thought maybe a male. And the general consensus on a Budgie forum is that it's a boy. Time will tell for sure, once the cere changes color. At the moment I'm calling him birdie until I know the sex for sure. Also since he's not doing anything but sitting around and barely moving, I can't really tell his personality yet so I also want to wait to name him for that reason.
He seems to be eating, I can only go by the seed hulls on the cage floor. He won't eat when I'm around. He also won't change perches when I'm around. I covered him last night for bed and then he immediately moved up to the higher perch. I heard a racket under the cover and lifted up an end to see he moved to the top perch. Sneaky.
I can't tell if he's going to be easy to tame because he doesn't fly around like a crazy scared bird when I put my hand in the cage to change water and food. Or if he's just in too much shock to care. He watches me and definitely notices that my hand is in the cage, but he just stays still. All my other birds would do the "omg there's a giant hand in the cage, fly away" thing.
I have learned he likes the show Smash, or at least the musical numbers. Seems to just be Smash. I'm playing music right now and no reaction, but last night while watching the pilot on Hulu he was softly chirping during a couple of the songs. He did the same tonight when I watched the second episode. Personally I probably wouldn't make a huge effort to watch it, it's not bad, the music numbers are great, but that's about it for me.
Ooh, he likes Aerosmith. Livin' on the Edge is playing right now and he's chirped a couple times.
It's only been 3 days, so he needs more time. I just hope he settles in soon. It's sad to see him sitting still. A quiet bird is not a happy bird. :(
