Hector had a younger sister who died while he was an intern in the hospital morgue. It devastated him.

Hector's family has a history of mental and emotional instability. His father was put into a mental institution shortly after Hector was born--daddy Ordell claimed ravingly that he had invented apples and that "Sparky" spoke to him regularly. His mother married shortly after.
