Remembering Sweetness

One-shot number 3!

Vaan gingerly draped an arm over his abdomen. It had been three weeks since the incident but his bruises and broken ribs were still evident. They had happened during a bad time for him, he had to admit.

Now he was in the Strahl in one of the back rooms. Sure the wounds were mostly gone, however Balthier hadn't wanted to risk it. He had sent the teen to the back after take-off to make sure he continued to heal properly.

While the thief had waited for any sign of the sky pirate's arrival he searched the room. He had found a book which Marquis Ondore had written. As he read it, memories of the many-month adventure reigned through his mind. All of them filled with Balthier and himself.

"Wait, stop!" Balthier shouted after Vaan.

"Forgive me," Basch has uttered, but the teen had no urge to listen to the traitor. He had been the one who signed Reks' death sentence.

Vaan stopped running once he had gotten to an underground lake. All of the monsters avoided him because magic seeped from his lithe form. Sitting down, he stared out over the Mist-filled waters.

"Vaan?" a lightly accented voice called.

The blonde in question looked up. What he saw was a brunette man. He blushed slighting then turned away.

"I won't let him near you if you don't want."

"Balthier, he killed my brother," Vaan spoke in a quiet anger, "You may trust him, but I can't. Not just yet, anyway."

"That's fine, my flower. Just so long as you know he'll be at our side for a while."

The thief's eyes went wide. "Your flower?"

"It's far better than desert churl or thief if I do say so. Besides, you reminded me of Galbana lilies."

Vaan ran as fast and hard as he could. For a common pick pocket, he was the slowest of the group. Even Larsa ran faster than him and he was a royal. They were running from Ba'Gamnan and his men.

"Vaan, hurry!" he heard Balthier shout.

Right as that was yelled, the blonde tripped. This badly scraped his hands and knees. Rolling onto his back, he just barely dodged one of the weapons.

"Yow!" he shouted in surprise.

"Come with me boy," the bounty hunter hissed, "You'll make excellent bait for Balthier."

"I don't think that is wise," a voice came as an arrow stuck into the hand holding the weapon.

Vaan felt a hand lift him up by his elbow. He looked up to see Fran beside him. A goofy smile graced the teams lips.

"Come on," the viera spoke, pulling him after her, "We need to get you back up to the front. Balthier is worried for you. He doesn't want you to become leverage for his enemy."

Vaan stared at the ethereal forms before him. One was the late Lord Rassler. Why he was able to see the dead prince's form, he didn't know. The other was Reks, clad in his Order armor.

"Reks," he whispered as both he and the figures lifted their hands to touch.

"Vaan, where are you?" Balthier called.

"Over here."

His eyes stayed on the forms. The thief smiled sadly. A stray tear rolled down his cheek. "I miss you," the blonde sobbed softly, "I miss you so much."

Arms wrapped around the thief's waist. A face buried itself into his hair. A slight squeeze was given before the face was lifted.

"Vaan, it's late. You should get back to camp."

"I know. I just wanted..."

Balthier smiled. He gripped Vaan's hand, squeezing it. "You wanted to talk to your brother. He's a handsome young man. No doubt at all that he took good care of you."

Vaan Looked back at the sky pirate. He didn't notice the smile that crossed the lips of the two ghosts.

"We're not leaving you behind!"

Vaan fought against Penelo and Ashe's grip. His eyes were wild with fear.

Balthier gazed upon him with a sad smile. "You have to. It's the foretold destiny of the leading man."

"Please Balthier! Don't do this!"

The sky pirate, who shown in the light of the flame, leaned forward. He placed a gentle hand on the thief's cheek. Capturing his lips, the blond felt a magic surge from the brunette.

"Bal...their...why?" the thief uttered before passing out from the silently cast Sleep spell.

Vaan closed the book as he saw the door open. Balthier entered a smile-smirk on his lips. The blonde stood and went over to the other.

"Vaan, my flower, are you hav-"

The thief stole the sky pirate's voice with a gentle kiss. It slowly deepened before they pulled apart. Gazes met, sapphire clashing with chocolate.

"That was unexpected. What was the reason behind your surprise for me?" the sky pirate questioned.

"I just... I love you."'

The former noble stared down, then smiled.
