There's a qualitative difference between 80s night, which is a "let's get down and have fun" tradition, and drag ball, which is an educational experience, an outlet of celebration and support for an oppressed group, a networking opportunity, and a political statement in addition to being a "let's get down and have fun" tradition.
Actually, there's some debate on whether Drag Ball really is an educational experience... We talked about it in a trans training last semester, but I can't really remember much, only that it exists...
i remember drag ball (in the early '00s) as being just another sexually charged party with girls in slutty outfits and guys in dresses. the political nature of the event was frankly lost on people. i think it'll be nice to have a smaller event and perhaps bring it back to its roots and the people who are truly into it will come and those who just want to get drunk and grope people... well, they can do that on their own time.
I appreciated and admired the scale of Drag Ball, but it always felt like the drag element was mostly secondary to the "let's have a giant fuckin' loud, vaguely themed party" element. But I guess if they just called it a giant theme party, there'd be even less passion and involvement from students in the organization.
