This new immigration bill to build a bigger wall on the mexican border and make it illegal to help undocumented immigrants just shows how ignorant some of these republicans must be on the issue. Either that or they're trying to fool people into thinking they're actually trying to do something about immigration. What's funny is that the republicans, who constantly praise the free market, can't seem to grasp the high-school economics concept of supply and demand (or worse, they think YOU can't). First of all, this "problem" is created when American businesses are willing to supply undocumented workers with jobs (often because they work more brutal hours for less pay and no benefits). For the businesses, hiring illegal immigrants means better profits.
The problem is that the republicans' base is divided. The republican party consists of rich people wanting the government to help them stay rich (or get richer) and people who economically should never vote republican but who've been duped into voting republican because they think that the republican party shares their christian values. Or maybe they think america is a kick ass, freedom-spreading machine (more on that another time). The rich people know that it's in their best interest to convince politicians not to regulate them; that way they can continue to hire whomever they want. The working class republicans think that illegal immigrants are taking away their job opportunities. Which they are, but at the benefit of the businesses. It's like this: You know when the republican guy always says, "The immigrants are just doing the jobs americans refuse to do."? That's only partly true; it's more like, "The immigrants are doing the jobs americans refuse to do--unless you pay them more." So to recap, if the republicans really wanted to curb illegal immigration, what they would be trying to do is regulate the businesses employing these people. But that would mean decreasing their profits, and we know we can't have that.
