Thanks for the help in my previous question. I think I have a better idea about Oberlin.

Is the food in the co-ops better/worse than the campus food?
Oberlin's campus food is Bon Apetit...is it pretty good?

Does everyone usually take two classes every semester?

I heard that Dascomb is the worst place to live in... ( Read more... )

Whether co-op food is better or worse than campus food depends on who you ask. I think it's better. It's healthier, generally, and if you are vegetarian or vegan you'll have more options. In the dining halls at any given meal you have more options of what to eat, but its mostly the same things day after day. In co-ops each meal only has one or two main dishes but it's something different every day. The campus food is pretty good, in my opinion, though I prefer co-ops.

Every semester you usually take between 3 and 5 classes- it depends how many credits your classes are for. For example, a lot of language classes meet every day, so they are 5 credit classes. Some science classes have a lab component and are 4, and most humanities classes are 3. You take between 12 and 16 credits.

A lot of people who live in Dascomb really like living there. Sometimes it gets a little loud/crazy and the building isn't very attractive.

haleth_the_elf answered the co-op versus campus food question really well. I've never actually eaten in a co-op beyond visiting with friends, but from what I've seen this seems to be the case.

ahava57 answered the question about classes well. Right now I'm taking three classes, each with 4 credits, and then an ExCo and secondary lessons, which brings me up to the 16 credit hour limit.

I lived in Dascomb last year, and it wasn't horrible. It was pretty loud, and I think things got a bit clique-y, but I think a lot of the bad stuff you hear about Dascomb is from people who haven't actually lived there...it has a reputation. But, yes. It was loud and could get crazy on the weekends. On the flip side, you just had to go downstairs to get food and it's really conveniently located. That said, I don't hang out with most of the people I met there, and I think the dorm I'm in now is much more social. (Though it's also a program house, which could account for the difference.)

...I hope those answers vaguely made sense.

I ate in CDS for a year and a bit, and co-ops for the rest. I always felt that the food either organization has an equal chance of being good/bad/weird, but CDS is still sketchy dining hall food, and in OSCA you know who made it and what went into it, even if it tastes funny or is underdone. Stevie, the main dining hall, always has something that's alright though I often ended up making some variety of sandwich. It depends on the co-op and semester, of course, but while there were always meals that were inedible or absent, most were fine and occasionally amazing. For me though, the food itself was only a small part of why OSCA was one of the most important parts of my time at Oberlin -- there's a ready-made community (with all a community's problems), opportunity to be involved in any aspect of the organization from paperwork to food buying to cooking or baking, gain skills for your life/resume, make your own food and have 24/7 access to an industrial kitchen, all of which is far cooler than food could ever be. And you still get ( ... )
