Mmkay. I've been stupid as hell and put off making my college decision until the absolute last second, which is now. And, even better, I'm missing a part of my financial aid application (the non-custodial parent form), and so I'm going to have to make my choice of college without knowing how much aid I can expect ( Read more... )

First of all, 20k is a normal amount of debt and worth it for Oberlin. I would put a max at 25k for four years, especially for EFC=0.

You definitely need to call the FA office. Non-custodial information can change the EFC dramatically, especially if the non-custodial parent makes a lot of money but isn't willing to contribute.

I have had hectic-stressful-busy week from hell and have not yet talked to the FA people. How do you think the non-custodial information would change what aid I receive (positively/negatively)?

I'm not an FA expert, or even an Oberlin student--just a prospie who hangs out on CC too much. Short answer: depends on how great of a difference the non-custodial info makes to your annual income and available assets. With typical middle-class assets, expect an EFC to be around 1/3 AGI.
